Minimum exposure times must be observed in order to reach the requisite S/N ratio. As per EN 1435 and EN 584-1, for the different ranges of utilization (energy, wall thickness), definite film elasses are prescribed. They are characterized by the minimum gradient-to-noise ratios. Based on this, one can calculate the minimum values for the S/N ratio based on the IP systems. Thickness. The traditional definition of thermal conductivity as an intrinsic property of a material where conduction is the only mode of heat transmission is not appHcable to low density materials. Although radiation between parallel surfaces is independent of distance, the measurement of X where radiation is significant requires the introduction of an additional variable, thickness. The thickness effect is observed in materials of low density at ambient temperatures and in materials of higher density at elevated temperatures. It depends on the radiation permeance of the materials, which in turn is influenced by the absorption coefficient and the density. For a cellular plastic material having a density on the order of 10 kg/m, the difference between a 25 and 100 mm thick specimen ranges from 12—15%. In use, a mantle of ice is frozen onto the outer surface of the thermometer weU. A common way to do this is to fiU the weU with cmshed dry ice until the mantle achieves a good thickness. Descriptions of the technique for doing this are given in several pubHcations and in manufacturers Hterature. The temperature of the water triple point is 0.01°C, or 273.16 K, by definition. Corrosion Resistance. The environment to which a plated part is to be exposed should be a part of any definition of corrosion resistance. Problems arise in testing a part in its intended environment in part because of the long time period required. In many plating processes, corrosion resistance is direcdy proportional to the plate thickness, so a specification on plate thickness is a much faster method of indirectiy measuring corrosion resistance. In specifying a corrosion resistance requirement for the production of plated goods, accelerated tests are used especially if plate thicknesses caimot be related to corrosion protection. [Pg.151]
