The Winch

In lumbermaking, you normally have to push the mill and roaring chainsaw through a cut, breathing exhaust fumes and spitting out sawdust all the while. But with my setup (1), you can stand back from the noise and vibration, and move the saw through the cut with minimum labor—all you have to do is crank a winch handle. Besides the winch, you ll need a remote throttle attachment for your saw, winch buttons to hold the winching ropes and a winch yoke. I ll discuss each of these in turn. [Pg.46]

You can make a winch from parts that are readily available. 1 use a small boat-trailer winch as the base mechanism. You ll also need an electric hand drill, a hacksaw and a bench grinder. [Pg.46]

Make winch dogs (to attach the winch unit to the log) by tapering Ys-in. bolts. Hold each bolt in the chuck of the drill and, with the drill switched on, grind the taper with a bench grinder (2). [Pg.46]

Assemble the winch (3,4) and mount the winch rope. Cut a length of /4-in. or VK-in. nylon or polypropylene rope a little longer than double the length of the log you ll be milling, then splice or tie an eye to each end. Fold the rope in half and attach the fold to the winch drum. Later you ll thread the rope ends through the cheek blocks on the winch yoke (p.92). [Pg.46]

Another extremely popular machine of this type is the jet dyeing machine which conserves energy by reducing the cloth-to-Hquor ratio to 1 10 or lower as compared to 1 20 for the winch. In this machine, the fabric which is in a rope form is transported by movement of the dye Hquor through a Venturi jet. This method provides intimate contact between the dye Hquor and each meter of material. The machine operates at 40—135°C. [Pg.369]

The HFBR core uses fully-enriched (93%) uranium oxide-aluminum cermet curved plates dad m aluminum. The core height is 0.58 m and the diameter is 0.48 m or a volume of 103.7 Itr. The U-235 weighs 9.83 kg supported by a grid plate on the vessel bottom. The coolant flow u downward. Iience. How reversal is necessary for natural circulation. It operating temperature and pressure are 60 ( and 195 psi. There are 8 main and 8 auxiliary control rod blades made of europium oxide (Lii A)o and dysprosium oxide (DyjO,), clad in stainless steel that operate in the reflector region. The scram system is the winch-clutch release type to drop the blades into the reflector region. Actuation of scram causes a setback for the auxiliary control rods which are driven upward by drive motors,... [Pg.411]

With the recent emphasis upon the analysis of trace metals and organic materials, particularly possible pollutants, it has become obvious that cleaner working areas are necessary. The winch room, with its assorted greases and oils,... [Pg.47]

You may have seen pulleys used in a warehouse to lift heavy loads. Another use for a pulley is on a large construction crane. The cable extends from the object being lifted up to the top of the crane boom, across a pulley, and back down to the electric winch that is used to pull on the cable. In this situation, the pulley again causes a change in direction of the pulling force, from the downward force of the winch that pulls the cable to the upward movement of the object being lifted. [Pg.207]

A special cleaning procedure was developed which virtually eliminated the characteristic decomposition of dilute metal-ammonia solutions. The optical cell was evacuated with a diffusion pump for several hours, about 50 ml. of anhydrous ammonia condensed onto the walls of the apparatus, and this wash ammonia was forced into a waste flask containing sodium and cooled with dry-ice. The optical cell was rinsed a total of four times. Approximately 500 ml. of anhydrous ammonia was condensed into the cell, about 5 mg. of potassium was introduced into the cell with the winch assembly (Figure 3a), and the solution was allowed to remain in the cell for at least 48 hours. The metal-ammonia solution was then forced from the cell into the waste flask the cell was rinsed four times with anhydrous ammonia and evacuated before introducing ND8. [Pg.136]

Alkali metal polysulfides are added to stabilize alkaline sulfur dye liquors against atmospheric oxygen. This is common for Hydron Blue, especially on the winch beck. An excess of sulfide and reducing agent in the wastewater has to be avoided therefore, low-sulfide dyeing methodes were introduced [71],... [Pg.372]

A wooden platform was constructed to suspend two hosemen on the face of the slope. It was raised and lowered by winch-driven cables. An entire batch of composite could be spray-applied without stopping to reposition the winch and cables. [Pg.230]

In dyeing, LUROTEX A25 is used to prevent the formation of creases in the winch beck deying of polyamide or polyester piecegoods. [Pg.98]

The first flight of the Reel Down system took place on 15 September 1982 from the National Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas. When the balloon was properly positioned for the descent phase of the experiments, a pin locking the suspended instrument cluster to the winching system was pulled and the controlled descent phase was initiated by releasing a magnetically controlled brake. Descent velocity was selectable by command from the ground. A line velocity of 7 1 m/sec was used for the experiment reported here. A full treatment of mechanical and electronic systems, as well as the data analysis regarding the dynamics of the system, appears elsewhere [19]. [Pg.365]

Briefly, dynamical behavior of both the suspended payload and the winching platform were documented in real time by a combination of accelerometers, gyros, load cells, solar sensors and a downward looking video monitor on the winch platform. As the descent phase unfoleded, several critical points became apparent ... [Pg.365]

Whereas the EM cable used with the LVFS was handled with a capstan and stored under low tension, the MULVFS cable had to be handled and stored under full tension. To minimize crushing loads on the cable, a large-diameter drum winch was used. Also a level wind was built, and a sheave was modified so that the 10-15 cm sized pigtail moldings would pass safely through them between the winch and the ocean. Slip rings (Meridian Lab, Middletown, Wisconsin) on the winch facilitated connection of the EM cable to the control electronics in the ship s laboratory. [Pg.160]

The sample stream enters through a PVC pipe [1.2-cm outside diameter (OD)] extending 0.5 m in front of the fish and passes through the pump and up the hose, thus, contacting only PVC, Tygon, and Delrin. The hose and rotary joint at the winch are nylon. [Pg.340]

In the past it has been and still is common practice to use mainly winches or jet machines for preparatory of both woven and knitted fabrics in tubular form. Starting with the winch beck, machineries for pre-treatment processes have passed through several stages of development (jig, beam, jet, overflow), some paralleled in washing machines. The current trends towards smaller series have led to a comeback of the conventional systems using jigger machines (Fig. 7-5) for textile processing. [Pg.219]

The speed of the winch should be adjusted according to the nature of the material to be dyed. Naturally the greater the amount of movement the more uniform will be the dyeing. With wool fabrics, however, excessive movement can cause undesirable felting or shrinkage and a slow speed is preferred. It is under such circumstances that the forced circulation with an external pump has much in its favour. With cotton and rayon fabrics fast-running machines are used, except when the materials are so delicate that they would suffer damage. [Pg.353]

As the cloth or web falls into the liquor from the winch at the back of the machine, it tends to bunch up and lie in a heap for a short time. This is no disadvantage with wool or cotton materials, but tends to cause serious creases in acetate rayons and other thermoplastic fibres. To overcome this a long shallow machine with an elliptical winch has been designed (Fig. 13.24). The elliptical shape of the roller folds the material in wide layers which are free from random creases as it falls into the dye liquor. The... [Pg.353]
