Coupled transport with supported and emulsion liquid membranes has made very little real progress towards commercialization in the last 15 years. In addition, it is now apparent that only a few important separation problems exist for which coupled transport offers clear technical and economic advantages over conventional technology. Unless some completely unexpected breakthrough occurs, it is difficult to imagine that coupled transport will be used on a significant commercial scale within the next 10-20 years. The future prospects for coupled transport are, therefore, dim.

The unique structures and novel properties of EMFs suggest hugely important potential applications in many fields ranging from biology, medicine, and electronics to material science. However, because of the low availability, applications of EMFs and their derivatives have not been investigated widely during recent years. Nevertheless, preliminary results present us with the future prospects for the applications of EMFs. 

A description of the experimental difficulties involved in the study of reactions of vdW molecules and clusters is given in Section II. It is followed by a discussion of the intracluster reactions and then a description of some of the intercluster processes studied. We end with some thoughts on the future prospects of this field.
