Thread guides

Small, complex-shaped glass articles such as thread guides for the textile industry and television gun mounts for the electronics industry are made by the multiform process. The dry-milled powder is mixed with an inorganic binder and a fluid vehicle, and then atomi2ed by a spray dryer into small, dried agglomerates of glass powder and binder with good flow characteristics. They are subsequently pressed to the desired shape and fired. 

In recent years sintered titanium(IV) oxide has been utilized in addition to aluminum oxide in the textile industry in which it is utilized as an abrasion-resistant material for thread guides.

Uses of nylon bearings include bushes in domestic appliances bushes, thread guides, rollers and slides in textile machinery ball joints and bearings in suspension and steering systems in cars. 

The number of winds is the number of revolutions the spindle, or package, makes while the thread guide is making one stroke, e.g. if the spindle makes three revolutions while the thread guide is moving from one end of the package to the other, the package is said to contain three winds. 

As seen before, thread breakage may result from overheated needles due to thermal aggression. Also, bad-quality or worn-out needles may cause problems due to excessive friction. Very often the problem lies in the machine. Incorrect threading or defects in the machine thread guides cause the thread to weaken and faU. The correct setting of the synchronisation and distance between needles and loopers, or other stitch formation elements, are also important.

Similar to a computerised flat knitting machine with two needle beds, a double-needle bar Raschel machine has two needle bars. It is possible to knit tubes of different sizes on such a machine with a set of fully threaded guide bars to knit two separate fabrics...

AI2O3) boules, about 50 mm long, are produced in this way, and are used, for example, in making thread guides, bearings and gramaphone needles. 

Multiform Process. Dry-milled glass powder is mixed with an organic binder and a fluid vehicle, spray-dried and the agglomerates pressed, to form small articles of complex shape such as thread guides and television tube electron gun mounts. 

Sapphire. Single-crystal alumina sapphire boules can be made by the VERNEUiL PROCESS (q.v.) and find use as bearings and thread guides. 

Thorpe s Ratio. A formula suggested by Prof. T. E. Thorpe in 1901 for assessing the probable solubility of a lead frit the sum of the bases expressed as PbO divided by the sum of the acid oxides expressed as Si02 should not exceed 2. Thread Guide. Porcelain thread guides are satisfactory for use with cotton, wool, or silk man-made fibres, e.g. rayon and nylon, are more abrasive and sintered alumina or synthetic sapphire thread... 

Major uses include in electrical connectors, gears, bearings, cable ties, fishing line, automotive valve covers, oil pans, sports and exercise equipment. Commercially, nylon is commonly used in the production of tire cords, rope, belts, filter cloths, sports equipment, and bristles. It is particularly useful when machined into bearings, gears, rollers and thread guides.
