In this second edition I have updated much of the material contained in the first one, and introduced, throughout the text, modifications to include the latest research contributions in the field. As a consequence of advances in knowledge and interpretation, however, the archaeological chemistry literature is ever burgeoning this compelled me to be particularly selective of the topics and the bibliographic material to be included in the book. [Pg.22]

CAS indexes oligomers of definite structures as specific compounds by the regular principles of organic nomenclature. When the precise structure is not known but the number of units is specific, dimer , trimer , etc., is expressed in the modification at the name of the monomer. Though the Formula Index is one of the tools for determining the systematic substance names, it contains no text modifications to the individual abstracts. Thus the Chemical Substance Index should be consulted for further information once the systematic CA Index Name has been determined. In the Chemical Substance Index to Chemical Abstracts, Vol. 118 (Fig. 31) the parent substance heading decanedioic acid can be found, then - in round brackets - the trivial name commonly used in the literature. The index entries and abstract numbers under decanedioic acid are followed by topic-oriented subdivisions (qualifiers) and chemical-function subdivisions (categories). The entry in the Index Guide shows that abstracts about DOS are listed under the class of compounds esters of decanedioic acid. Under this index heading the individual esters are named in alphabetical order. The text of many index entries starts with plasticizer. But not only these are relevant for the query. Also within the text modifications the term plasticizer is mentioned. Abstracts to patents are recognizable by the letter P preceding the abstract number. [Pg.53]

Five abstracts with the index entry arrest are listed under the heading heart, disease in the General Subject Index (Fig. 35). In the General Subject Index a large number of text modifications and abstract numbers are listed under the term hydrogenation of carbon monoxide (Fig. 38). Some text modifications contain the term Fischer-Tropsch, for although Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is not part of the controlled vocabulary, it can occur in the index entries when the author used it in his original publication. All the abstracts in Fig. 38 about carbon monoxide could deal with the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and should therefore be read. [Pg.67]

The text modifications mainly describe the composition of the catalysts. All entries should therefore be critically examined to determine under which circumstances the various catalysts have been employed and studied. [Pg.69]

It is evident from scanning the text modifications in the Chemical Substance Index that many of the abstracts were mentioned in the General Subject Index. Duplication of references is an indication of the importance of a particular paper to the search problem - the more search terms which lead to the same abstract, the more relevant the publication is to the problem. [Pg.73]

All the abstracts under a relevant heading should be consulted to ensure the completeness of a literature search, as the text modifications are selected according to the subject matter stressed by the author in his paper. His paper could well include aspects which are of interest for the search, but which are not the main topic of his publication. This additional information can be obtained only by reading the text of the abstract. [Pg.73]

The advantage of an online search for such a complex topic is demonstrated as an example in Fig. 122 (Sect. 7.3.2.4) and Sect. 9, which shows that Fischer-Tropsch is searchable in the CA file the searcher finds documents with Fischer-Tropsch as part of the text modifications or the abstract texts. But in addition all terms of the just developed search profile should be used to retrieve all relevant documents to this topic. Though the process of selecting relevant search terms is the first essential step for the online search, too. [Pg.73]

The Formula Index primarily contains references to molecular addition compounds, especially to the sodium salt (marked with a dot). The Chemical Substance Index must be consulted to ascertain in which context the particular substance was mentioned in the cited literature (Fig. 46). The sodium salt of the trichloroacetic acid is found under the subdivision compounds. This subheading is described in the definition of categories (Sect. 2.1.3.2). The text modifications following the individual compounds provide information about the contents of the publication. [Pg.77]

ChemSketch has some special-purpose building functions. The peptide builder creates a line structure from the protein sequence defined with the typical three-letter abbreviations. The carbohydrate builder creates a structure from a text string description of the molecule. The nucleic acid builder creates a structure from the typical one-letter abbreviations. There is a function to clean up the shape of the structure (i.e., make bond lengths equivalent). There is also a three-dimensional optimization routine, which uses a proprietary modification of the CHARMM force field. The HyperChem MMh- code and program also differ from MM2(1977) by having parameters in text files separate from the code. These parameter files are available for your modification and additions. Connecting a control computer to another system is a modification and should only be carried out after systematic study of possible consequences (see Section 20.4.3). Professional science writers have been particularly helpful to high school teachers. Sample surfaces are atomically smooth surfaces of cleaved mica sheets for SFA, and various colloidal spheres and plates for a colloidal probe AFM. For example, many recently discovered modifications of the elements have been included, most of which occur at high pressures. The treatment of symmetry has been shifted to the third chapter and the aspect of symmetry is given more attention in the following chapters. New sections deal with quasicrystals and other not strictly crystalline solids, with phase transitions and with the electron localization function. There is a new chapter on nanostructures.
