This area was the most profusely studied in the AQUATERRA project in terms of biological effects in fish populations. Barbel and bleak were the sentinel species selected in this area and an array of histological and biochemical tests were used to monitor the impact due to three major sources of pollution mercury and OCs at Monzon (with a comparison in one of the papers with Flix) and PBDEs in Barbastro [1—4, 37]. Mercury pollution was directly correlated to an increase of MTprotein in the liver of barbel captured downstream Monzon when compared to samples captured upstream (Fig. 3a). However, mRNA quantitative analyses failed to show any differences between downstream and upstream Monzon, neither correlated with MT protein levels. Further studies showed that MT mRNA in liver is a rather weak marker for chronic metal pollution in liver (see below) [4], The presence of degenerative hepatocytes in barbels and bleaks was also linked to mercury poisoning although it can also reflect the impact by other pollutants, like OCs or PBDEs (Fig. 3e). 

The effect of alum as adjuvant was also tested in the liposphere-vaccine formulation. In the presence of lipid A, enhanced immune response is obtained even in the absence of alum. This observation is very important because there is increasing concern about the toxic side effects of alum in the long term. Research has suggested a link between aluminum and diseases of the brain, including Alzheimer s disease.

Computers were first used in laboratories to calculate results and generate reports, often from an individual instrument. As automated analysers were developed, so the level of computerization increased and computers now play a major role in the modem laboratory. They are associated with both the analytical and organizational aspects and the term Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is often used to describe this overall function. Such systems are available that link the various operations associated with the production of a validated test result, from the receipt of the sample to the electronic transmission of the report to the initiator of the request, who may be at a site removed from the laboratory. Other uses include stock control, human resource management and budgets.

Martini and Wood (2002) tested the bioavailability of 3 different sources of Ca in 12 healthy elderly subjects (9 women and 3 men of mean SEM age 70 3 and 76 6 years, respectively) in a 6-week crossover trial conducted in a Human Study Unit. Each Ca source supplied 1000 mg Ca/day and was ingested for 1 week with meals (as 500 mg Ca 2x/day), thus contributing to a high-Ca intake (1300 mg Ca/day). A low-Ca intake (300 mg Ca/day strictly from the basal diet) was adhered to for 1 week in-between each treatment. The Ca sources included skim milk, CCM-fortified OJ, and a dietary supplement of CaCOa. Assessment parameters were indirect measures predicted to reflect the relative bioavailability of Ca postprandially via an acute PTH suppression test (hourly for 4h). Longer-term responses to Ca supplementation were assessed via a number of urinary and serum hormone, mineral, and bone resorption biomarkers (i.e., vitamin D, Ca, phosphorus, and collagen t) e 1 N-telopeptide cross-links).
