Equipment to be used for the application of the test product should be calibrated just prior to the application date. Such equipment should not be used for any other application prior to the test application after the equipment has been calibrated. 

Before undertaking a discussion of the mathematics involved in the determination of reaction rates is undertaken, it is necessary to point out the importance of proper data acquisition in stability testing. Applications of rate equations and predictions are meaningful only if the data utilized in such processes are collected using valid statistical and analytical procedures. It is beyond the scope of this chapter to discuss the proper statistical treatments and analytical techniques that should be used in a stability study. This extension in the laboratory can be seen as the fantastic hypothesis testing application of molecular modeling. It is rare to find a chemical problem where there are not at least a few theories of the molecular mechanism involved. How many times has each of us heard steric affect or hydrogen bonding invoked as the explanation of a variety of experimental observations made at the bench level How useful would it be to be able to actually build accurate, quantitative models to investigate such ideas ...

The observations described above are based on small-scale laboratory testing. Application to industrial operations such as mineral processing introduces further questions. Transducer crystals are normally cut to a resonant frequency, the duckness being one-half die acoustic wavelength. A bond between die crystal transducer and the specimen matches the acoustic impedance, and carries the acoustic power into the latter. Backing layers may be fixed to the rear surface of the transducer. These layers are selected to reflect power forward into the crystal and specimen in some applications. On the odier hand, they may be selected to absorb power so as not to complicate signals received in material testing applications.

The holographic systems based on dye sensitized polymerization suffer from the drawback that the presence of the dye interferes with effective image reconstruction. "Fixing" techniques have been devised (41), but they are only partly successful. Nevertheless, the Hughes compositions are used commercially for some nondestructive testing applications. 

The techniques employed in qualitative analysis vary in their complexity, depending on the nature of the sample under investigation. In some cases it is only necessary to confirm the presence of certain elements or groups for which specific chemical tests, or spot tests, applicable directly to the sample, may be available. More often, the sample is a complex mixture, and a systematic analysis must be made in order that all the component parts may be identified. Often, the first simple stages of qualitative analysis require no apparatus at all. Things like colour and smell can be observed without any need for apparatus.
