In calculating penalties, it is important to keep in mind the sunset provisions of 4 test rules. When a violation of 4 arises, the export notification requirements of 12(b) may also have been violated if the product was exported. After the sunset date of a test rule, the export notification requirement also terminates. As a practical matter, this means that if the test rule expired in 2005, there can be no export notification penalties imposed for an export in 2006.

Waste water rules have pH limits, a common range being between 6 and 10. There are also limits for fats and oils, solvents, heavy metals, and a variety of other compounds and ions. The assessment of reaction kinetics by means of batch tests may be strongly affected by dye adsorption on the biophase and supports. The relevance of the adsorption phenomena of dyes on biophase has been addressed in studies regarding free cells [41], granular support biofilm [24], entrapped cells [11, 18], anaerobic sludge [10,24,31,34] and biological activated carbon (BAC) [42,45,47,48]. They have pointed out that the kinetics may be overestimated if the assessment of the adsorption contribution to the dye removal is not taken into account. Under batch conditions, the dye is fastly split between the liquid phase and the biophase, resulting in a sharp reduction of the dye concentration in the liquid phase until adsorption equilibrium is approached. The rate of dye adsorption must be estimated and ruled out in the kinetic assessment. 

As a conclusion to his preparative course the student should undertake several preparations, for which he has to look up the appropriate methods in scientific journals, instead of finding them worked out in minute detail in a manual of laboratory instruction. In so doing he will learn, with the aid of the directions given above, how to consult the literature, and how to make use of the chemical library most of all, however, these more difficult preparations will serve to test his capacity for laboratory work. When synthesising a compound in several stages it is absolutely essential to test and consolidate each separate stage by means of test-tube experiments before the whole of the substance is risked. Whoever fails to observe this rule will pay dearly for his neglect by loss of material and time.

Figure 3.32 shows XRD patterns of (MgH -i-LiAlH ) composites after DSC testing up to 500°C. The primary phases present are Mg and Al. Peaks of MgO and (LiOH) HjO arise from the exposure of Mg and Li (or possibly even some retained LiH) to the environment during XRD tests. Apparently, XRD phase analysis indicates that a nearly full decomposition of original MgH and LiAlH hydride phases has occurred to the elements during a DSC experiment. In addition, no diffraction peaks of any intermetallic compound are observed in those XRD patterns. That means that no intermetallic compound was formed upon thermal decomposition of composites in DSC. Therefore, the mechanism of destabilization through the formation of an intermediate intermetallic phases proposed by Vajo et al. [196-198] and discussed in the beginning of this section seems to be ruled out of hand.
