The elements that form ionic compounds are found in specific places in the periodic table. Atomic anions are restricted to elements on the right side of the table the halogens, oxygen and sulfur. The amino acid units that make up a protein molecule are joined together in a precise sequence when the protein is made on a ribosome. The chain is then folded, often into a very compact form. When microtubules were visualized by electron microscopy (EM), after the improvement of methods of fixation, it was realized that they formed the structural basis of flagellar axonemes and of so-called spindle fibers, as well as occurring as individual filaments in the cytoplasm. Ninety-one of the 111 elements in the periodic table occur in nature. The remaining 20 elements are synthetic, which means they can only be made in a laboratory. All chemical elements are organized in a chart called the periodic table of the elements.
