Test method shear

Some of the more important properties of materials that are used for the construction of embankments or fills include gradation, unit weight, specific gravity, moisture-density characteristics, shear strength, compressibility, bearing capacity, permeability, and corrosion resistance. Table 4.21 provides a list of the standard test methods usually used to assess the suitability of conventional earthen fill materials for use in embankment or fill construction. [Pg.186]

In friability tests the material s susceptibility to attrition is evaluated. But it is not as simple as it may seem at first to select the suitable test procedure. In this context Pell (1990) gave a simple thought experiment to illustrate the difficulties If we took a batch of rubber stoppers and a batch of diamonds, and rubbed them on abrasive paper, we would conclude that the diamonds were more attrition resistant. If we instead struck the particles with a hammer we would conclude that the rubber were more attrition resistant. So, different test methods can rank materials differently with respect to their attritability. This effect was for example observed by Knight and Bridgwater (1985). They subjected spray-dried powders to a compression test, a shear test and a test in a spiral classifier. They found that each test gave a different ranking of the materials. Obviously, there is no... [Pg.447]

A test method to evaluate the shear stress capability of a seal material is reported [36], An electrolyte-anode-electrolyte trilayer was glass sealed to two metal interconnect plates as shown in Figure 5.11. Shear testing was done in two different modes, constant loading rate and constant displacement rate, to determine the shear modulus and viscosity. [Pg.232]

In-Plane Shear Properties. The basic lamina in-plane shear stiffness and strength is characterized using a unidirectional hoop-wound (90°) 0.1 -m nominal internal diameter tube that is loaded in torsion. The test method has been standardized under the ASTM D5448 test method for in-plane shear properties of unidirectional fiber-resin composite cylinders. D5448 provides the specimen and hardware geometry necessary to conduct the test. The lamina in-plane shear curve is typically very nonlinear [51]. The test yields the lamina s in-plane shear strength, t12, in-plane shear strain at failure, y12, and in-plane chord shear modulus, G12. [Pg.414]

The same test method, although not standardized, can be used to characterize the laminate in-plane shear behavior. This is accomplished by winding a multiorientation (hoop/helical and/or helical only) tube. Other test methods that can be used to measure in-plane shear stiffhess/strength of filament wound composites are discussed by Tamopol skii and Kinds [45]. These methods include schemes for torsion of intact rings and split rings. Both of these ring test methods are used to evaluate the in-plane shear modulii G0r and G0z for a filament-wound laminate. [Pg.414]

The lamina s transverse compressive/tensile properties are determined from a hoop wound (90°) cylinder loaded in axial compression and/or tension. The test methods have been standardized under ASTM D5450 and D5449. The tube geometry and manufacturing procedures are similar to those used in the lamina s in-plane shear tests. [Pg.414]

Data can be obtained from tests in uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, equibiaxial tension, pure shear and simple shear. Relevant test methods are described in subsequent sections. In principle, the coefficients for a model can be obtained from a single test, for example uniaxial tension. However, the coefficients are not fully independent and more than one set of values can be found to describe the tension stress strain curve. A difficulty will arise if these coefficients are applied to another mode of deformation, for example shear or compression, because the different sets of values may not be equivalent in these cases. To obtain more robust coefficients it is necessary to carry out tests using more than one geometry and to combine the data to optimize the coefficients. [Pg.117]
