Test definition

The word lest is quite broad in its definition, and many of the inspection steps in the course of the compressor manufacturing cycle can appropriately be called tests. An example would be the material tests. The API mechanical equipment standards, however, attempt to narrow the test definition. This chapter will discuss testing within these narrowed definitions. The first test defined in most API mechanical equipment standards is the hydrostatic test, and it will, therefore, be the first test covered in the chapter.

ECVAM is the leading international center for alternative test method validation. Hartung et al. (29) summarized the modular steps necessary to accomplish stage 3 (test validation). The seven modular steps are (I) test definition, (2) within-laboratory variability, (3) transferability, (4) between-laboratory variability, (5) predictive capacity, (6) applicability domain, and (7) performance standards (29). Steps 2-4 evaluate the test s reliability steps 5 and 6 evaluate the relevance of the test. Successful completion of all seven steps is necessary to proceed to stage 4 (independent assessment or peer review). This modular approach allows flexibility for the validation process where information on the test method can be gathered either prospectively or retrospectively. The approach is applicable not only to in vitro test methods but also to in silico approaches (e.g., computer-based approaches such as quantitative structure-activity relationships or QSAR) and pattern-based systems (e.g., genomics and proteomics).

Most test methods specify a conditioning period in a standard atmosphere prior to testing. Definitions for atmosphere, conditioning atmosphere, test atmosphere, and reference atmosphere may be found in ISO 558 (3]. while ISO 554 [4] provides standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing. Both of these are general standards, not confined to polymer-based materials. The recommended atmosphere is 23 C. 50% relative humidity, but 27 C, 65% relative humidity is permitted for tropical countries and 20 C, 65% relative humidity for certain special cases. Coated fabrics, for example, may require conditioning at 20 65, since this atmosphere has been traditionally used for fabrics.
