Tenderization, aging

My deepest thanks, of course, goes to my family to my mom and dad, Sara this world to my wife Irene, who has so infinitely enriched my life that I feel as though I ve been blessed with a glimpse of heaven and to my son Noah, who (at the tender age of two) has already taught me that love has no bounds and that mother nature is infinitely wiser than we know. Without my family s unconditional love, support and patience this book truly could not have been completed,... [Pg.830]

Tenderness. The contractile state of the muscle after rigor mortis is a major factor in meat tenderness, which is affected by post-mortem conditions creating differences in tenderness. Ageing of fresh pork can be used to improve tenderness. The process is based on a continuous weakening of the structural elements by different endogenous muscle peptidases along with an improved palatability (Taylor et al., 1995). [Pg.154]

Samuel Colt is perhaps best known as the inventor of the Colt 45 revolver. But in the 1830s, at the tender age of 19, Colt was touring the United States and Canada as Doctor and/or Professor Coult, amazing onlookers with live demonstrations of laughing-gas inhalation. For. 25 (. 10 for children), audience members could watch Sam Colt administer the gas to volunteers, who would then entertain the crowd with their inebriated reactions. These money-making nitrous oxide demonstrations helped finance the prototype and production of Colt s first five-shot revolver. [Pg.384]

Born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 9, 1899, Ralph Shriner was the oldest of the two children of George B. Shriner and Edith Barnett Shriner. His father worked as an agent for the railroad for some years. Ralph and sister, Ruth, attended public schools in St. Louis. During the summers, Ralph worked on his Uncle Al s farm in Cuba, Missouri, in the Ozarks, southwest of St. Louis. His uncle also owned the Ford Model T dealership, and one of Ralph s jobs was to go to the freight yard with his cousin Jim, assemble the cars, and drive them to the sales yard. Thus, Ralph learned to drive at the tender age of 12. Uncle Al also became the owner of the local telephone company, after it went bankrupt, and Ralph and his cousin Jim became the line repairboys, learning how to fix the phones, climb the poles, and maintain the wires. In his teens, Ralph built his own radio receiver and transmitter and became a ham radio operator. He was active in the Boy Scouts, became an Eagle Scout, and later served as a scoutmaster. [Pg.294]

But you will answer mine. The patrician stepped forward. Andrea Zancani was serving a term as one of the Lords of the Night Watch, theSignori di Notte, and thus was Sergeant Torre s current boss. That is a starter position for the nobility, and I would have put him around the tender age of thirty. He is a resident of San Remo, so I often see him in church. [Pg.95]

When I had my heart attack and first bypass surgery in 1978 at the tender age of thirty-five, there was no such thing as cardiac rehabilitation and I got no advice about exercise. So if I did anything strenuous, I was scared that I d have another heart attack. [Pg.77]

Most of all, this book is devoted to my wife, Cyd, whose love has sustained me through this effort, and to the loving memory of our daughter. Erica, cruelly torn from us at a tender age. [Pg.935]

One article claimed that schoolchildren were buying marihuana from "unscrupulous peddlers [who] openly sell the drags to boys of tender age who appear on streets under its influence." An interview with sixty children, all under age fifteen, revealed that all of them knew what marihuana was, where it could be published, and that all had used it. The reporter failed to mention that the children were Mexican or black, and that marihuana was something not very new or out of the ordinary to them. [Pg.106]

Such is the case of Moseley (figure 6.6), who died in the First World War at the tender age of 26, before anyone outside the then very small circle of atomic physicists had heard of him. His subsequent lame hes in two brief articles that firmly established that atomic number, rather than atomic weight, was indeed a superior ordering principle for the elements. In addition, he was able to lay the groundwork by which others could settle conclusively that there were a total of 92 naturally occurring elements and could specify precisely where the remaining gaps were situated in the periodic table. [Pg.170]

SFM techniques are developing with an astonishing speed. Every year significant improvements are made by instrument manufacturers. Thus it is to be expected that this brief description of imaging techniques will be out of date within a few years. Due to the tender age of force... [Pg.514]

A decision of Archbishop Demetrios Chomatianos demonstrated the use of testaments to create guardians in the thirteenth century. A man named Apergios Barouses had lost his father at the tender age of two. Fortunately, his father had established by testament the husband of Apergios s older sister as the young child s guardian. ... [Pg.85]

The ninth-century vita of Saint Makarios also suggests that Byzantines considered uncles the most likely guardians for orphans. According to the vita, Makarios was born in Constantinople circa 780. After losing both his parents at a tender age, one of his relatives accepted responsibility for his care. The author of the vita knew only that Makarios received as guardian a male relative, but he added that when people later recounted the saint s early years, they naturally assumed that the relative was Makarios s uncle. ... [Pg.260]

I still have a wooden stool I made in shop class as a teenager, with turned legs and a woven seat. It s a nice piece, and what it taught me at a tender age is that the things we make with our hands are valuable to us. It also taught me how much fun tools can be Some items, such as hammers, planes, and saws, are great basics to have on hand for minor repair jobs, but with the addition of some (carefully used) power tools, a whole world of wood- and metalworking opens up. [Pg.273]

Unfortunately all such acts of bravado, at least on my part, came to an end the following year because we were expected to choose just three subjects to pursue at Advanced level and I chose chemistry, physics and mathematics. This meant that from the tender age of fifteen I was destined to never again study history. As for philosophy, this would not even have been an option had I chosen to go the way of the humanities. Unlike in the French system where philosophy is almost synonymous with the humanities, the study of philosophy in the British system was completely unheard of at least in the vast majority of secondary schools. [Pg.1]

The most common adverse effects in adults include injection site reactions (e.g., tenderness, pain, and warmth), headaches within 5 days after vaccination, and fatigue. Local reactions may be minimized by using an appropriate needle length based on the person s age and size and by administering the injection intramuscularly in the deltoid muscle. Children may also have feeding disturbances. Hepatitis A vaccine given... [Pg.351]

The cascade of biochemical events described above enhances the cellular necrosis and tissue breakdown, leading to what meat scientists and food technologist call meat-tenderization. Since muscle is primarily protein in nature and since hydrolytic, and specifically proteolytic, activity increases during postmortem aging, muscle represents a remarkable pool of material for the production of flavor peptides and amino acids as well as other precursors for flavor development (2). [Pg.79]

Fibromyalgia A disease characteristically affecting depressed, middle-aged women complaining of diffuse, symmetrical and persistent musculoskeletal pain/tenderness and sleep disturbance with no organic basis, or a real pathological entity. It requires more than a psychological/psychatric approach to treat effectively. [Pg.582]

Tender or fictitious copal is found in commerce mixed sometimes with a little Indian copal, but it is brought from the Brazils without any admixture. That from India is vitreous, translucent, and nearly as transparent os glass, but age communicates to it a shade of yellow on the surface. Its ordinary form is in tears it possesses a weak, agreeable odor, is very friable, and preserves this property even in the varnish made with it, on which account it fa not so much esteemed. Heat renders it soft and elastic, so that It can be drawn out into threads as fine as silk.. Alcohol partly dissolves it, the residue appearing like gluten. Ether takes up nearly- the whole substance. [Pg.840]

In 3040 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia the effects of finasteride 5 mg/day for 4 years were studied in those over and under 65 years (78). In both groups the drug was effective and there were no significant differences in cardiovascular adverse events between placebo and finasteride. There were significant differences between placebo and finasteride in the overall incidence of typical drug-related adverse events, but there were no specific differences associated with age. The principal events were impotence (8.8%), reduced libido (6.8%), reduced volume of ejaculate (3.5%), other disorders of ejaculation (1.5%), rash (0.6%), breast enlargement (0.5%), and breast tenderness (0.2%). [Pg.155]

Research with turkey males grown to 45 weeks of age showed that replacement of maize in the diet by triticale improved the tenderness of the cooked meat (Savage et al., 1987). Other research with turkeys showed that mature breeding males could be fed diets based on triticale with no effect on semen production (Nilipour et al., 1987). [Pg.91]
