A metallurgical plant using an ore will invariably produce solid residue after the metal values have been removed from the ore. The residue from pyro plants may be disposed of by trucking or conveying, based on techno-economics and feasibility. However, pipeline conveyances of the residue slurry is also in vogue for certain applications where residue quantities are fairly large.

The model should record the relevant techno-economic characteristics of the concrete system in sufficient detail so as to be able to understand the processes of change contained in the model results (e.g., fuel substitution, changes in the production programme, construction of hydrogen infrastructure). 

The analysis of the potential and the economic performance of hydrogen supply routes from neighbouring countries to Europe performed in this study are mainly based on techno-economic criteria. In practice, there are many factors that might adversely influence the emergence of hydrogen corridors, among others, competition with alternatives in a free market economy. The need for renewable technologies creates ample catalytic opportunities. We have seen that the techno-economic scenarios favor different technologies in the course of time. This implies on ongoing need for process innovation, for which catalysis is the chemical back bone. Clearly, progress requires a sustained integrated effort with the many other disciplines that are needed to develop the devices and the required infrastructure. 

What is required is a form of resource and technology assessment. This could be summarized in a matrix in which the potential of each resource and technology can be quantified and charted. This matrix is shown in figure 2 the items in each column are illustrative and the lists are by no means exhaustive. The identification of R D requirements then requires a techno-economic assessment of the possibility of different pathways through the matrix, and is the product of (Resource) (Transport) (Conversion Technology) (Transport) (End Use).

In addition, techno-economical studies are underway to evaluate the potential production cost and help the selection of one or two processes for which demonstrators will be built in the next few years. 

Another more immediate benefit of these techno-economic studies is their use, via sensitivity studies, to identify the areas in which sizeable gains could be made to help focus R D efforts.

Transforming the efficiency and the investment cost into the resulting hydrogen production cost requires a techno-economic model. CEA uses an economic model based on a levelised approach hydrogen selling price is set to equalise revenues and expenses over the plant life. In other terms, all expenses are split over the whole production of the plant, with the use of a discount rate to take into account the different years at which expenses and production take place.
