The first ground-source heat pump was installed in Indianapolis, Indiana in the home of Robert C. Webber, an employee of the Indianapolis Power and Light Company. It was a 2.2 kW compressor hooked to a direct expansion ground coil system in trenches supplying heat to a warm air heating system. The installation was monitored beginning October 1, 1945 and this is the first day of ground source heat pump operation documented in literature [2],... [Pg.5]

The ratio of the total heat output of the heat pump to the quantity of electric energy input to the heat pump is called the heat effect or coefficient of performance (COP). This value depends on the temperature gradient, but is typically around 3-4 for an output temperature of 30 °C (and can be higher). Canada specifies a minimum COP of 3.0 for all ground source heat pumps rated below 35 kW (Bouma 2002). [Pg.503]

Ethanol/Water This is an aqueous solution of denatured grain alcohol. Its main advantage is that it is nontoxic. Therefore, it has found application in breweries, wineries, chemical plants, food freezing plants, and ground source heat pumps. As a flammable liquid, it requires certain precautions for handling and storage. [Pg.1214]

Ground source heat pumps extract heat from the ground by circulating a fluid through polythene pipes buried in the ground in trenches or in vertical boreholes. [Pg.175]
