The complete four-component system is necessary when the diagnostic requirement is rapid, low unit-cost analysis for both the strain-level characterization of pathogenic agents and identification of hoax bio-terror materials. Using the complete system, we are proposing to validate MS-based microbial taxonomy and to transfer the technology from an analytical research to a clinical or public health production-diagnosis environment.

With the expansion of the fields of microbial taxonomy and biochemistry, additional microorganisms have been identified which elaborate flavor and odor compounds. Table 2 compiles a few examples from the literature of microorganisms which produce odors in defined media. Most of these fermentations have been carried out only on small laboratory scale. In many studies the volatiles produced are not well characterized and little is known about the mechanism and pathways of biosynthesis.
