Traditionally, inerts have been obtained from sources such as high-pressure gas cylinders or tube trailers or through evaporation of cryogenic liquids from bulk tanks. Other sources of inerts include (NFPA 69, Standard on Explosion Prevention Systems, National Fire Protection Association, 2002 FM Global, Loss Prevention Data Sheet 7-59, Inerting and Purging of Tanks, Process Vessels, and Equipment, 2000)... 

Pseudocumene is shipped in barges, tank cars, tank trucks, isocontainers, and drums. Mesitylene is shipped in tank trucks, isocontainers, and drums, whereas durene is shipped molten in heated tank trucks, isocontainers, and occasionally as a cast solid in drums. Mesitylene, pseudocumene, and hemimellitene are classified as flammable liquids the higher homologues are classified as combustible. The higher melting PMBs require additional precautions when handled in the molten state to avoid thermal bums. Detailed shipping and handling procedures are described in manufacturers material safety data sheets (MSDS). 

One solution that appears reasonable is to restrict container labels to only the most pertinent hazards, utilizing NFPA-704 Labels for tanks and areas, and providing expanded material safety data sheets in the workplace. 

This is the reason why safety data sheets cannot replace such instmctions. Whereas safety data sheets are addressed to the employer, the instmctions are designed for the workers. Of course, the information and recommendations of safety data sheets provide the background and the main sources used in the preparation of instmctions. For example, an instmction for loading acetone from a tank car will certainly be different from that for a workplace where acetone is used for cleaning technical equipment. 

All biocide users should be well informed regarding safe handling, storage and feeding of these products. Make sure that proper safety equipment is used when feeding, and that eyewash stations and showers are available. Make sure bulk tanks are properly labelled. A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) should be kept with the product at all times. The MSDS explains how to handle the product and what to do in case of an accident. The Nalco Alert telephone number should also be posted with the MSDS. Additionally, registration labels should be kept on storage containers at all times.

It is essential that a Tank Contents label be attached to each mixing vessel (or indeed, in-line mixing rig), along with relevant Control of Snbstances Haz-ardons to Health (COSHH) sheets or Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for each material present. This ensures that anybody in the laboratory encountering a problem with a rig is aware of the materials present and appropriate safety precautions. 

Estimate the cost of the steel for the spherical storage tank in the preceding problem if the steel sheet costs 0.25 per pound. On the basis of the data presented in Fig. 14-56, estimate the fraction of the purchased cost of the tank that is due to the cost for the steel. 

Furthermore it is assumed, that the tank is filled once per week (h = 52 a ) and that the safety equipment is tested once per year. The flow sheet of the tank and the fault tree model are shown in Fig. 9.45. The data for quantifying the fault tree are found in Table 9.24.
