Note These are fires reported to U.S. municipal fire departments and so exclude fires reported only to federal or state agencies or industrial fire brigades. Fires are rounded to the nearest 100, deaths and injuries to fiie nearest 1, and direct property damage to the nearest 100,000. Sums may not equal totals due to rounding errors. Late calls - there may be circumstances when a fire occurs that is not immediately evident to those in the workplace and is not detected by the alarm system. In the case where the fire self-extinguishes it may be that it is discovered at some time after the event. In this case the local manager will inevitably conduct the initial investigation to establish that there had in fact been a fire. In these circumstances the Fire Service should be notified by the normal method. Fire Services will treat these events as late calls and will normally respond with a single officer who will take the necessary details to complete the required fire report form.
