Solid casting

Pseudocumene is shipped in barges, tank cars, tank trucks, isocontainers, and drums. Mesitylene is shipped in tank trucks, isocontainers, and drums, whereas durene is shipped molten in heated tank trucks, isocontainers, and occasionally as a cast solid in drums. Mesitylene, pseudocumene, and hemimellitene are classified as flammable liquids the higher homologues are classified as combustible. The higher melting PMBs require additional precautions when handled in the molten state to avoid thermal bums. Detailed shipping and handling procedures are described in manufacturers material safety data sheets (MSDS). 

In what follows frequent reference will be made to acceptors and donors. Acceptors are test samples of the expl subjected to shocks and donors are the shock generating systems. Unless otherwise specified, liq expls and single crystals of solid expl will be considered as homogeneous materials, and all poured , pressed or cast solid expls will be considered as heterogenous materials. As will become apparent, there are pro-nouced differences in the shock behavior of homogeneous and heterogenous expls...

Poloxamers generally occur as white, waxy, free-flowing prilled granules, or as cast solids. They are practically odorless and tasteless. At room temperature, poloxamer 124 occurs as a colorless liquid. 

Pluronic [BASF], TM for a nonionic series of 28 related difunctional block-polymers terminating in primary hydroxyl groups with molecular weights ranging from 1,000 to more than 15,000. Aromatic nitro compormds, primarily 2,4,6-TNT, have long use as military explosives and commercial application in cast boosters to initiate insensitive blasting agents. In the laboratory, TNT maybe encountered as prills, flake, or a cast solid ranging in color from light yellow to brown. Acetone solutions of TNT slowly develop a pink color and red is produced with ethanolic KOH. Numerous TLC systems have been described for the identification of TNT, usually with visualization by alcoholic KOH. TLC or GC-MS identification of minor products, other isomers of TNT or DNT, provides information to establish a potential common source. The use of isotope ratio MS is now being explored for this purpose. GC or LC-TEA readily identifies TNT. Combinations of TNT and NH4NO3, known as Amatols , have been used as military explosives to conserve TNT and could be encountered in old military ordnance.

The radiation nature during the detonation is rather complex. The intensity of radiation depends not only on the explosive characteristics but also on the air temperature in the shock wave front resulting from the interaction between the air and the detonation products. Some researchers tried to eliminate the shock wave radiation by immersing the explosive charge into water. However, those investigations as well as the determinations of the detonation temperature of pressed and cast solid explosives containing a considerable amount of air inclusions have shown that it is difficult to obtain reliable results concerning detonation temperature of the solid explosives.

When casting solid concrete structures, the developed heat may cause considerable temperature differences within the hardening concrete since the coefficient of thermal expansion a is approximately 1 10 K , this may give rise to stresses and cracking in the concrete.
