Both the attribute declaration and specification for ENUMJTYPE ENCODING are used in the package STATE DEFN. They are placed in a package in the first place because some s)mthesizers will not allow attribute declarations anywhere except in a package or an entity. More details of die synthesis attributes discussed above and others are contained in Box 7.6. [Pg.238]

Substructure searches provide another method of searching for available starting materials. They arc used primarily for planning the synthesis of combinatorial libraries. After the target compound has been dissected into a set of suitable precursors, substructure searches can provide for each of them a series of representatives of a certain class of compounds, Siibsti ucturc searches enable the user to specify attributes such as open sites or atom lists at certain positions of the structure. Figure 10.3-38 shows the possible specification elements for the query in a substructure search. [Pg.581]

Metabolic Functions. The functions of the thyroid hormones and thus of iodine are control of energy transductions (121). These hormones increase oxygen consumption and basal metaboHc rate by accelerating reactions in nearly all cells of the body. A part of this effect is attributed to increase in activity of many enzymes. Additionally, protein synthesis is affected by the thyroid hormones (121,122). [Pg.386]

Toxicity Amelioration. Cancer researchers traditionally have not focused their attention on the question of toxicity amehoration. This is partiy attributed to the lack of predictive animal models for human toxicities. For example, the preclinical rat model, used as a predictor of myelosuppression, has failed to predict myelosuppression in humans in clinical trials. In addition, reduction of one toxicity may result in the emergence of another, more serious problem. Research efforts to address the problem of toxicity amelioration has progressed in several directions. The three most prominent areas are analogue synthesis, chemoprotection, and dmg targeting. [Pg.444]

Synthetic polymers have become extremely important as materials over the past 50 years and have replaced other materials because they possess high strength-to-weight ratios, easy processabiUty, and other desirable features. Used in appHcations previously dominated by metals, ceramics, and natural fibers, polymers make up much of the sales in the automotive, durables, and clothing markets. In these appHcations, polymers possess desired attributes, often at a much lower cost than the materials they replace. The emphasis in research has shifted from developing new synthetic macromolecules toward preparation of cost-effective multicomponent systems (ie, copolymers, polymer blends, and composites) rather than preparation of new and frequendy more expensive homopolymers. These multicomponent systems can be "tuned" to achieve the desired properties (within limits, of course) much easier than through the total synthesis of new macromolecules. [Pg.176]

The acid-catalyzed conversion of the l,2,3,4-tetrahydro-j8-carboline derivative 337 (R = CHg) into the strychnine-type ring system 338 has been attributed to an equilibrium involving the protonated Schiff s base 339 of tryptamine (i.e., the intermediate in the Pictet-Spengler type synthesis of tetrahydro-j8-carbolines, cf. Section III, A, 1, a), and the a- (337) and the j8-condensation products (340). [Pg.165]

The first synthesis of a 1,4-dihydropyridine, which is known as the Hantzsch ester, is attributed to Arthur Hantzsch (1882LA1, 1885CB1744). Since then,... [Pg.269]

The sedation side effect commonly observed on administration of classical antihistaminic drugs has been attributed in part to the ease with which many of these compounds cross the blood brain barrier. There have been developed recently a series of agoits, for example, terfenadine (198), which cause reduced sedation by virtue of decreased penetration into the CNS. This is achieved by making them more hydrophilic. Synthesis of a related compound, ebastine (197),... [Pg.48]

Scheme 5 details the synthesis of / -cormorsterone (14) from 17. Oxidative scission of both carbon-carbon double bonds in 17 with ozone, followed by two straightforward operations, furnishes intermediate 38. The stability of the oxime in these systems is noteworthy, and is attributed to its hindered nature. At this juncture, it is instructive to note that substituted cyclopentene rings, like the... [Pg.108]

It would be difficult to overestimate the role that the polyether antibiotics have played in the development of organic synthesis, particularly in the area of acyclic stereocontrol. These molecules have inspired many spectacular achievements in organic synthesis, achievements that have dramatically expanded the power and scope of the science. In fact, it would not be inaccurate to attribute much of our understanding about the factors controlling acyclic stereoselectivity for such fundamental processes as hydroboration,5 epox-... [Pg.186]

The expressions acyclic or cyclic precursors indicate whether a heteropyran ring does or does not occur during a given synthesis. No importance is attributed to the fact that reactants may already contain a ring. [Pg.181]

In the synthesis of the squalenoid glabrescol (72 originally attributed structure), containing five adjacent (all cis) THF rings, the necessary precursor of the polyepoxide cascade, the pentaepoxide 71, was achieved by epoxidation of each of the trisubstituted double bonds of the known (R)-2,3-dihydroxy-2,3-dihydrosqualene (70) by the Shi epoxidation approach (Scheme 8.18) [34]. Treatment of 71 with CSA at 0 °C and subsequent purification by column chromatography provided the pure polycyclic ether 72 by a cascade process reasonably initiated by the free secondary alcohol functionality [35a]. [Pg.283]

COX-2 synthesises PGI2 (prostacyclin) and the high incidence of myocardial infarctions with selective COX-2 inhibitors has been attributed to inhibition of COX-2 in vascular tissues. Prostacyclin, made by blood vessel walls, inhibits aggregation of platelets and maintains a balance with thromboxane. Thromboxane, which is released by platelets, promotes clotting. Prostacyclin is synthesised mostly by COX-1, but in humans selective COX-2 inhibition reduces its biosynthesis in vivo. This reduced synthesis may lead to an overactive thromboxane system and increased risk of thromboembolism. [Pg.407]
