The development that has taken place is the result of 100-150 years of enormous investments. All over the world, this has left us with a sewer and treatment plant infrastructure that will be in use for an unknown future. We will still see developments in terms of technical improvements and sustainable solutions. Scientific interest in nanocarbon hybrid materials to enhance the properties of photocatalysts and photoactive electrodes has been growing rapidly [1-8]. The worldwide effort to find new efficient and sustainable solutions to use renewable energy sources has pushed the need to develop new and/or improved materials able to capture and convert solar energy, for example in advanced dye-sensitized solar cells - DSSC (where the need to improve the photovoltaic performance has caused interest in using nanocarbons for a better cell design [9,10]) or in advanced cells for producing solar fuels [11-13]. 

Tremendous progress is needed to obtain a highly selective catalyst to develop a process for hydrogen generation by ethanol steaming, which is a sustainable solution for the hydrogen production problem.

Sustainable Solutions for Modern Economies is not meant as a political pamphlet. However, the very concept of sustainability and its social, economical and ecological aspects have been established and accepted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a political initiative obligating the signatory states to implement Agenda 21, the wide-ranging blueprint for action to achieve sustainable development worldwide. Sustainable Solutions for Modern Economies is meant as an essay to reflect the aspects of sustainability in the different sectors of national and global economies, to draft a roadmap for public and corporate sustainability strategies, and to outline the current status of markets, applications, use and research and development for renewable resources. 

Safety and hygiene effects. Limitations related to process/product safety can in some cases be solved by the use of microstructured reactors. For example, very exothermic reactions and explosive gas mbctures have been demonstrated to operate safely in structured reactors [12]. The transport of hazardous chemicals could also find sustainable solutions in the development of distributed production in miniaturized plants [13]. In the frame of product engineering, micromixers allowed the quantity of emulsifiers and preservatives required to stabilize emulsions for pharmaceutical applications to be reduced [14]. 

The peaceful use of nuclear power is a side product of military development. During and even long after the Second World War there was neither time nor need or resources to develop sustainable solution to radioactive waste disposal. The waste was simply stored and in some cases, unfortunately, released to tiie environment.
