In looking at the life cycle analysis of surfactants based on renewable materials versus petrochemical feedstocks there are pros and cons to each side. Petrochemical processes use more energy but generate less waste whereas agricultural processes generate more waste and gaseous emissions. However, the opportunities for efficiency improvements are greater in the oleochemical and allied industries than in the petrochemical industry [40].

We propose that there are multi-layered processing mechanisms. The top layer for processing holds consciously accessible information. The bottom layers can not be assessed directly and controlled. On the top layer communication is actually an accessible information exchange about the real world with its social and ecological aspects. A typical feature of this model is that on the one hand the supplier tries to sell more volumes (increasing revenue), on the other hand the user tries to control costs by buying less and/or at a cheaper price.
