Sustainability measures

Solutions vaiy greatly in their ability to sustain measurable amounts of supersaturation. With some materials, such as sucrose, it is possible to develop a supersaturation coefficient of 1.4 to 2.0 with little danger of nucleation. With some common inorganic solutions such as sodium chloride in water, the amount of supersaturation which can be generated stably is so small that it is difficult or impossible to measure. [Pg.1655]

In all of the texts below the respective EU institutions that have initiated mandatory substitution, demonstrate a clear understanding of the long-term necessity to apply sustainable measures to control the effects of the aforementioned substances on human health and the environment. This is furthermore evident when considering the objectives laid down in the directives. The overriding tenor is the protection of human health (workers health in 89/391/EEC, 90/394/EEC, 98/8/EC) and the protection of the environment through increasing the environmental performance of a particular product (2000/53/EC), and finally through the prevention of hazardous waste (98/8/ EC, 2002/95/EC 2002/96/EC). [Pg.26]

A systemic approach of the whole supply chain allows the designer to identify the critical stages where inefficient use of raw materials and energy takes place, as well as the sources of toxic materials and pollution. Developing sustainable processes implies the availability of consistent and general accepted sustainability measures. A comprehensive analysis should examine the evolution of sustainability over the whole life cycle, namely that raised by the dismantling the plant. [Pg.5]

A systematic approach based on flowsheeting, steady state and dynamic, can be applied in view of eco-balances of impurities and hazards substances, both at the level of plants and industrial sites. Methods for assessing environmental performances of processes are desirable. Some new sustainability measures are discussed at the end of this chapter. [Pg.21]

Promoting the sustainable development implies the availability of reliable measures. These measures should regard the complete manufacturing-supply chain over the predictable product life cycle. The metrics should be simple and understandable by the large public, useful for decision-making agents, consistent and reproducible. The sustainability measures proposed recently by Schwartz, Beloff Beaver (2002) have these properties. They refer to the same unit of outputs, for example the to the value-added dollar Fy4, defined as Revenues minus Costs of raw materials and utilities. The metrics that will be presented are consistent in the sense that 1) the lower the metric the more effective the process, and 2) all indicate the same direction. [Pg.27]

The project concludes with a synthesis of the main results, as material and energy consumption, capital-investment, profitability indices and sustainability measures. The critical analysis should review the main requirements and possible improvements. [Pg.569]

The technical quality management of an analytical laboratory can be a hard pill to swallow, but it need not be. It can help prevent excessive waste in time and money, improve productivity by eliminating duplication and waste, and most importantly lead to increased customer satisfaction and increased profits. Unless strong and sustained measures are taken, improvement in data quality caimot be achieved or maintained. No pain, no gain ... [Pg.14]

EVALUATION OF DESIGN ALTERNATIVES BY CONSIDERING VARIOUS SUSTAINABILITY MEASURES... [Pg.151]

In Eqs. [6.14] and [6.15] Me is the flow rate of chemical C Icj is the score of the chemical inherent safety subindex of chemical C Np is the number of equipment P and Ipi is the score of the process inherent safety subindex of equipment P. Again the dry grind process is found to be superior. In summary, it is observed that the dry grind process is superior to the wet milling process for aU three sustainability measures. [Pg.163]

Today malaria eradication is an accomplished fact for more than 633 million people who once lived at risk to this disease [1]. An additional 330 million live in regions where parasite transmission is no longer a major problem [1]. To have progressed this far, and to have brought a sustained measure of well-being to more than one quarter of the world s population, is an international public health achievement without parallel. [Pg.171]

In order to better identify the current situation and to find the improvement potential, companies should build own sustainability assessment system which aims to help the managers in decision making by facilitating the control and improvement of different aspects of the business operations. The sustainability measures should include the following dimensions economic, ecological, and social. [Pg.141]

Indicators are built by the values (a measurement is related to the object of a care) and indicators create values (care about everything what is measured (Sustainable Measures 2010). [Pg.143]

The sustainability measures should allow to assess the company performance in the three dimensions as proposed by Brundtland Commission economic, ecological, and social (WCED 1987). [Pg.143]

Market uptake and public perception. Reducing the amount of construction waste on a new building has limited marketing value however investing in a renewable technology or other more visible sustainable measures may bring attention to a project. Therefore a constmction company may be more likely to invest in these areas rather than in recycling. [Pg.251]

In 2013, Moody and coworkers [151] published an interesting, yet thought-provoking paper on the noncatalytic amination of heteroaryl chlorides in water. This study was conducted on the premise that although palladium catalysis revolutionized JV-arylation chemistry, they are used without due consideration of alternatives. This is a very valid opinion, but we believe that the catalytic superiority of using both Pd and Cu catalysts (and others under various circumstances) can be further reinforced once sustainable measures such as immobilized system, alternative solvents, or very low loadings are put in force. [Pg.141]

The GSI can be calculated based on the data provided by Muthu et al. (2013). The GSI can provide an overall sustainability measurement of the plastic bags. The overall index for each of the materials can be found with the weighting factors of 50% for GWP, 25% for waste generation, and 25% for pollution factor. The pollution factor is an arithmetic average of eutrophication, acidification, and air pollution. [Pg.163]

The GSI can be calculated based on the data in Table 7.16. The GSI will provide an overall sustainability measurement of the four sustainable plastics. [Pg.179]

Note that the concentration required for spedfic cleavage is much less than that used for nonspecific cleavage with unmodified phen (No. 24). Even trace Cu " is sufficient to sustain measurable specific cleavage with oligonucleotide-linked phen. [Pg.473]

Sustainability measures, in general, add to the cost of the material being proctrred. At the same time, as mentioned earlier, demands of products with sustainable components can in fact increase. However, not all items experience the same demand pattern. The interactions between the cost of sustainability and market response are shown in Fig. 9.7. [Pg.287]
