Suspension control, market

For reagents, reagent products, reference and control materials, of information concerning common technological characteristics and/or analytes, as well as any important and subsequent modification, including suspension of marketing authorisation. 

The total market for acceleration sensors in 2000, according to NEXUS [7], is 467 million. The market will grow to 687 million by 2005. The main drivers for this growth are the increasing rates of equipment with side airbags. Active suspension control, which typically uses 3-5 sensors per system, has the potential to spur further growth if more vehicles are equipped with these systems in the future. 

Metal poHshes may contain emulsifiers and thickeners for controlling the consistency and stabilization of abrasive suspensions, and the product form can be soHd, paste, or Hquid. Liquid and paste products can be solvent or emulsion types the market for the latter is growing. Formulas for metal poHshes are Hsted ia Reference 12. A representative Hquid emulsion product may contain 8—25 wt % abrasive, 2—6 wt % surfactant, 0—5 wt % chelating agents, and 0—25 wt % solvent, with the remainder being water. The abrasive content ia an emulsion paste product is greater than that ia a solvent product. 

Medicine and Nutrition. A stabilized buffered suspension of selenium sulfide has been marketed for many years as Selsun Blue (Abbott Laboratories) for control of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. A similar sulfur or selenium sulfide shampoo containing a metallic cation complex has been prepared (122). Topical appHcation of selenium sulfide controls dermatitis, pmritis, and mange iu dogs (see Cosmetics Veterinarydrugs). 

A more influential market driver is the growth of electric and electronic systems on vehicles. The demands come not only from a variety of comfort, convenience, communications, and entertainment features, but also from an evolution to electromechanical operation for many auxiliary devices that to date have been purely mechanical, such as power steering, valve train actuation, braking, suspensions, and air conditioning, among others. Moreover, power train electrification enables new levels of driver responsiveness and controllability in addition to fuel economy benefits. 

A dramatic example of the impact of crystal polymorphism on a drug formulation is that of ritonavir (Norvir ), used for the treatment of HIV patients. The problem arose in May of 1998, approximately two years after the launch of the drug, when researchers at the Abbott Laboratories became aware that after 240 production batches it was no longer possible to obtain ritonavir in the crystal form (Form I) approved by the FDA and required for the formulation of Norvir because of the sudden and unexpected appearance of a more stable and much less soluble crystal form (Form II, Fig. 3.3.17). The loss of control over the production process forced Abbott to withdraw the drug from the market for approximately one year until they learned how to replace the solid formulation with a gel capsule suspension with greater problems of stability and bioavailability. Subsequent investigations have led to the discovery of four other crystalline forms of ritonavir [33].
