A small area of the outer surface of the upper arm is exposed to test and control materials under occlusive cover. The test and control materials are applied to round chambers and taped to the arm with surgical tape. A standard irritant (20% sodium dodecyl sulphate [SDS]) is used as the positive control. Each panellist has up to four patches applied, each patch being applied for an increased duration. Due to the potential irritancy of the test materials a cautious approach is used. The first patch is applied for one hour, the second, third, and fourth patches for two, three, and four hours, respectively. Each patch is applied to a different site on consecutive weeks. This approach allows any unexpected or unacceptable reactions to be limited to a minimum.

Surgical tapes are intended to minimize necrosis, scar tissue formation, problems of stitch abscesses, and weakened tissues. The problems with surgical tapes are similar to those experienced with traditional skin tapes. These include (1) misaligned wound edges, (2) poor adhesion due to moisture or dirty wounds, and (3) late separation of tapes when hematoma or wound drainage occur.

The low order of toxicity, favorable FDA status, and light color result in a variety of medical pressure sensitive adhesive uses for selected polyisobutylene polymer grades. Applications include surgical tape, oral bandages and ostomy appliances. 

Some pressure-sensitive tapes including surgical tapes have been reported to contain carboxylic acrylate copolymers. A pressure sensitive tape consisting of foil, polyester, polyolefin, or acrylic adhesive layer and a car-boxylated polymer-aminofunctional silane primer layer has been patented. The silane alone is reported to interfere with adhesion of the tape to the substrate but excellent adhesion is obtained if a carboxylated EVA copolymer is added to the primer.

These wounds and incisions have been traditionally closed with sutures, staples, or surgical tapes, and more recently, tissue adhesives. An ideal wound closure device should be user friendly, quick, pain free and result in excellent cosmesis, without device removal requirement, and of course be cost-effective [87]. None of the current closure devices possesses all of these requirements. Topical cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives, however, have a number of the characteristics of an ideal wound closure device.
