Due to their favorable solubility, alkanesulfonates are preferred as surfactants in liquid products and concentrates. The recent trend to renewable resources has led to a somewhat reduced use in formulations of household detergents in past years. While some manufacturers have withdrawn these surfactants from, for example, manual dishwashing detergents, others did not. Besides many other industrial applications, alkanesulfonates are one of the most important emulsifiers in vinyl polymerization.

Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate is undoubtedly the anionic surfactant used in the greatest amount because it is the basic component in almost all laundry and dishwashing detergents in powder and liquid forms. However, alcohol and alcohol ether sulfates are the more versatile anionic surfactants because their properties vary, with the alkyl chain, with the number of moles of ethylene oxide added to the base alcohol and with the cation. Consequently, alcohol and alcohol ether sulfates are used in almost all scientific, consumer, and industrial applications. 

Alcohol ether sulfates are used in mixture with sulfonates, either alkyl-benzenesulfonates or a-olefinsulfonates, and other surfactants, such as fatty alkanolamides, in manual liquid dishwashing detergents and light-duty detergents. These combinations show the excellent emulsifying and foaming properties required in dishwashing. 

A great number of detergent compositions using a-sulfo fatty acid esters are given in the patent literature. The a-ester sulfonates are major or minor components, besides other surfactants and builders [68-76]. Some examples of laundry and dishwashing detergents are given below. 

They have high foam for shampoos and are kind to the skin. They are also used in light duty products such as dishwashing detergents. It is the least sensitive of the anionics to water hardness and therefore has benefited in the trend away from phosphates. They have 25% of the production for the major household surfactant market.

Liquid detergents based on Pilot Calsoft, Cal suds and Calfoam surfactants produce safe, effective suds with excellent grease-cutting properties for hand dishwashing. Detergents containing Calamide C are especially mild to sensitive skin. 

Of the three main types of surfactants, the anionics are by far the most commercially important class, constituting, in particular, the major surfactant type represented in laundry and hand-dishwashing detergents. Among the anionics, linear sodium alky] benzene sul-fonaie (LAS), linear alkyl sulfates, and linear alkyl ethoxy sulfates are by far the most widely used compounds. (The industry convened voluntarily to linear alkyl chains in the mid-1960s to obtain improved biodegradabilily relative to the branched chain alkylates formerly used.)... 

Nonionic surfactants are also used in substantial amounts in laundry detergents and in automatic dishwashing detergents, both applications reflecting in particular their generally lower sudsing characteristics than the anionics. Commercially important examples uf the nonionics include the alkyl ethoxylates, the ethoxylated alkyl phenols, the fatly acid ethanol amides, and complex polymers of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and alcohols. 

Household ammonia, liquid window cleaners, liquid all-purpose cleaners and various other household cleaning products constitute this small market for ammonia. Ammonia is also used in the manufacture of ammonium salts of alcohol, ether and sulfates. These compounds are widely used as surfactants in detergents that are in liquid dishwashing formulations57. 

Dishwasher surfactants must not generate a lot of foam because that can block the pipes within the machine, as you may have discovered when, having run out of dishwasher detergent, you have simply tried using some hand washing-up liquid instead. The surfactants in dishwash products are low-foam non-ionic ones such as fatty alcohol ethoxylates, especially those in which the hydrocarbon chain is 12-14 carbon atoms long. These produce almost no foam. 

Cleaning products are used regularly in most households These include dishwashing detergents, denture cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, oven cleaners, drain cleaners, wood and metal cleaners and polishes, tub, tile, and shower cleaners, bleach and pool chemicals.
