Surface condenser sizing

Utility Baiances. The operating company should also require a balance for each plant utility. The most involved of the utility balances is usually the supply/demand steam tabulation showing all levels of steam and condensate and their interactions. The steam balance is almost always required at this stage for any required side studies. The steam balance influences many design parameters, such as boiler size and contingency, treated water makeup rates, blow -down disposal rates, chemicals usage, and surface condenser size. [Pg.215]

Attention is directed to the fact that ether is highly inflammable and also extremely volatile (b.p. 35°), and great care should be taken that there is no naked flame in the vicinity of the liquid (see Section 11,14). Under no circumstances should ether be distilled over a bare flame, but always from a steam bath or an electrically-heated water bath (Fig.//, 5,1), and with a highly efficient double surface condenser. In the author s laboratory a special lead-covered bench is set aside for distillations with ether and other inflammable solvents. The author s ether still consists of an electrically-heated water bath (Fig. 11, 5, 1), fitted with the usual concentric copper rings two 10-inch double surface condensers (Davies type) are suitably supported on stands with heavy iron bases, and a bent adaptor is fitted to the second condenser furthermost from the water bath. The flask containing the ethereal solution is supported on the water bath, a short fractionating column or a simple bent still head is fitted into the neck of the flask, and the stUl head is connected to the condensers by a cork the recovered ether is collected in a vessel of appropriate size. [Pg.165]

Owing to the corrosive action of bromine upon corks j-jg 7, l. and rubber stoppers, ground glass joints are recommended in this preparation. The apparatus, depicted in Fig. Ill, 37, 1, is particularly convenient for the preparation of bromides from alcohols. Ethyl bromoacetate (1). Fit a large modified Dean and Stark apparatus provided with a stopcock at the lower end (a convenient size is shown in Fig. Ill, 126, 1) to the 1-htre flask containing the crude bromoacetic acid of the previous preparation and attach a double surface condenser to the upper end. Mix the acid with 155 ml. of absolute ethyl alcohol, 240 ml. of sodium-dried benzene and 1 ml. of concentrated sulphuric acid. The efficiency of the Rankine cycle itself can be increased by higher motive steam pressures and superheat temperatures, and lower surface condenser pressures in addition to rotating equipment selection. These parameters are generally optimized on the basis of materials of constmction as well as equipment sizes. The vapor deposition method at variable substrate temperature provides additional insight into the structure and wetting properties of 8CB in its various phases. If the substrate temperature is between 41 and 33°C, fiat islands 32 A thick are formed if only a small amount of 8CB is condensed on the surface. The size of these fiat islands increases with deposition time while their height remains constant until a uniform layer is formed. If more 8CB is deposited, droplets form on top of the film.
