Additional Insights

The first section of this chapter discusses various ways that chemical properties are computed. Then a number of specific properties are addressed. The final section is on visualization, which is not so much a property as a way of gaining additional insight into the electronic structure and motion of molecules. 

In this section we resume our examination of the equivalency of time and temperature in the determination of the mechanical properties of polymers. In the last chapter we had several occasions to mention this equivalency, but never developed it in detail. In examining this, we shall not only acquire some practical knowledge for the collection and representation of experimental data, but also shall gain additional insight into the free-volume aspect of the glass transition. 

Comparing Eqs. (8.29) and (8.30) also leads to the conclusion expressed by Eq. (8.22) aj = Xj. Again we emphasize that this result applies only to ideal solutions, but the statistical approach gives us additional insights into the molecular properties associated with ideality in solutions ... 

Gash Flow Examples. Several hypothetical ventures are presented to illustrate cash flow analysis. Venture A exhibits a cash flow analysis. Venture A exhibits a cash flow pattern typical of process ventures. Other ventures are introduced for comparison and to provide additional insight into cash flow analysis. 

Modern petro/chemical processes provide the opportunity for gathering a large number of measurements automatically and frequently. Most are redundant and provide little additional insight into unit performance. The difficulties in handling a large amount of information with httle intimate knowledge of the operation increases the hkeli-hood that some of the conclusions drawn will be erroneous. 

While there have been only a limited number of reactions of e-(aq) and Pu ions in near neutral or basic solutions, apparently systematic reactivity patterns provide some additional insight. For example, it has been noted that the second order rate parameters (M s-1) for the reactions of...

The present study demonstrates that the analytic calculation of hyperpolarizability dispersion coefficients provides an efficient alternative to the pointwise calculation of dispersion curves. The dispersion coefficients provide additional insight into non-linear optical properties and are transferable between the various optical processes, also to processes not investigated here as for example the ac-Kerr effect or coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), which depend on two independent laser frequencies and would be expensive to study with calculations ex-plictly frequency-dependent calculations. 

Throughout the studies discussed in this review there persist a number of questions of so fundamental a nature as to preclude much further progress in the field before additional insight is available. These involve areas in which decisive experiments have not yet been done, and in which such experiments appear to be either very difficult or totally impossible. These questions arise What is the nature of the starting species What effects result from reactions extraneous to the radiochemical phenomenon— adsorption, exchange, etc. At what stage following the nuclear event do the observed chemical reactions occur ... 

The vapor deposition method at variable substrate temperature provides additional insight into the structure and wetting properties of 8CB in its various phases. If the substrate temperature is between 41 and 33°C, fiat islands 32 A thick are formed if only a small amount of 8CB is condensed on the surface. The size of these fiat islands increases with deposition time while their height remains constant until a uniform layer is formed. If more 8CB is deposited, droplets form on top of the film. This is shown in the image of Figure 14.

Comparison of the TR spectra of the fluoranil ketyl radical (FAH ), the triplet state ( FA) and the fluoranil radical anion (FA ) to the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations for these intermediates provides additional insight into... 

Additional insight is possible from Fig. 38b. Here we see that the magnitude of the explained variance accounted for by the second PC has noticeably increased after minute 70. This is consistent because, from process knowledge, it is known that removal of water is the primary event in the first part of the batch cycle, while polymerization dominates in the later part, explaining why the variance profile changes around the 70-minute point. 

An examination of the draft formats for the data summaries in the pharmaceutical Expert Report gives some additional insight into the nature of the required discussion. 

Additional insights into the dynamics and structure of bimodal elastomers have been obtained by dynamic light-scattering experiments [129], neutron scattering experiments [130] and calculations [131], dual cross-linking system experiments [132], non-affine swelling [133], and the computer simulations already mentioned. 

Parasitism by T. spiralis has been a subject of scientific interest for over 150 years. Recently, considerable attention has been paid to the parasite by immunologists interested in immunity to nematodes in general, and mucosal immunity in particular. It has been shown that glycan-specific antibodies are highly effective mediators of host defence against intestinal 7. spiralis infection. Protective monoclonal antibodies have been used to elucidate mechanisms of worm expulsion, as well as to identify molecules that the parasite uses to create its niche. In the future, detailed characterization of these molecules and their functions should afford additional insights into parasitism by Trichinella spiralis, and possibly also by other types of pathogen. 

Another possible advantage with MolSurf descriptors (and also other multi parameter descriptors) is the fact that they describe the investigated compounds not only with a single value, as in the case of PSA and log P descriptors, but in a multivariate way. This approach provides a more balanced description of the requirements that a structure must have in order to be well absorbed and may, in turn, provide additional insight on how to develop compounds having favorable absorption properties. However, as will be described in Section 16.4.10, simpler -i.e., less computationally demanding - parameters carrying similar information content with equal interpretability may be used to derive models for intestinal absorption at the same level of statistical quality.
