Since EU Directive 2005/33/EC bans high-sulphur heavy oil (bunker fuel) as fuel on ships from 2010, this source may become relevant as a cheap feedstock for hydrogen production in the future. 

For ships, the foreseen revision of Directive 2005/33/EC amending Directive 1999/32/EC should include stringent regulations for the sulphur content in marine fuels for certain areas. Furthermore, limits for NOx and PM emissions should be imposed, which are possible due to recent IMO amendments of MARPOL Annex VI. Also, Emission Control Areas should be enlarged to the extent possible. PM and NOx emissions of existing ships should be addressed e.g. via an emission trading scheme. 

Viking Energy is the first cargo/offshore support vessel to be fuelled with LNG. The celebrated project has attracted much attention for its efforts and innovative approach lead by the Norwegian shipping company Eidesvik AS3. The sporting paper caps which are used for starting signal pistols in Japan each contain about 0.05 g of a composition consisting of 74% potassium chlorate, 18% red phosphorus, 8% sulphur and small amount of starch. Good fresh water, fit for drinking, should be in a vigorous natural motion, to keep both properties well mixed. Sulphur, a solid at normal temperatures, is shipped as a molten liquid (119 C melting point) to improve the ease of handling, loading, and unloading. Many other solids and otherwise viscous liquids are heated for the same reason.

Most atmospheric pollution is due to means of transport road vehicles, trains, ships and aircraft. The main pollutants emitted by these sources are CO2, organic volatiles (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOJ and particles of heavy metals such as lead or mercury. The main immobile sources of atmospheric pollution are certain kinds of industrial plant, and power stations or heaters that bum fossil fuels. The combustion of fossil fuels releases sulphur compounds (H2S, SO2, etc.) as weU as NO, CO2, VOCs and particulate matter.
