Transportation road vehicles

The chapter on Radioactive chemicals (Chapter 11) has been updated. Considerations of safety in design (Chapter 12) are presented separately from systems of work requirements, i.e. Operating procedures (Chapter 13). Tlie considerations for Marketing and transportation of hazardous chemicals are now addressed in two separate chapters (Chapters 14 and 15). Chemicals and the Environment are now also covered in two chapters (Chapters 16 and 17) to reflect the requirement that the impact of chemicals on the environment should be properly assessed, monitored and controlled. Although a substantial contribution to atmospheric pollution is made by emissions from road vehicles and other means of transport, and this is now strictly legislated for, this topic is outside the scope of this text. Chapter 18 provides useful conversion factors to help with the myriad of units used internationally.

Hydrogen penetration in the transportation sector will likely be led by fleet vehicles, i.e., transit buses, courier, delivery, and light-duty utility vehicles that refuel at home base. Niche applications could also play a strategic role in developing hydrogen infrastructures and energy systems. Such end-use applications include forklifts and off-road vehicles. 

Fillers are delivered by traditional means of transportation, including rail cars, road vehicles, ships, and barges. Rail cars are used for delivery of bulk powder, paper sacks, and intermediate bulk containers. Rail cars usually have a capacity between 20 and 55 tons. The options available for future modes of transportation are listed in Table 7.1. For road vehicles in particular, Figure 7.1 illustrates the complexity of possible interactions between the various energy sources (feedstocks), the derived fuels and the types of power-train, together with the many feasible combinations to be evaluated when oil becomes scarce.

There are many safety features built into motor vehicles today. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sets safety standards for motor vehicles. They change over time. Table 14-1 is a summary of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) also publishes numerous standards for vehicles, including many safety standards. Vehicles include off-road vehicles and even golf carts. Other Department of Transportation agencies also establish vehicle safety standards. The Urban Mass Transportation Administration has safety standards for buses and rail vehicles and the Federal Highway Administration has safety standards for trucks. Industry associations, such as the Truck Trailer Manufacturer s Association, have also produced safety standards. 

Most atmospheric pollution is due to means of transport road vehicles, trains, ships and aircraft. The main pollutants emitted by these sources are CO2, organic volatiles (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOJ and particles of heavy metals such as lead or mercury. The main immobile sources of atmospheric pollution are certain kinds of industrial plant, and power stations or heaters that bum fossil fuels. The combustion of fossil fuels releases sulphur compounds (H2S, SO2, etc.) as weU as NO, CO2, VOCs and particulate matter.
