Sulfated monoglycerides

The phase behavior of surfactant systems is particularly complex because of the existence of numerous lyotropic (solvent-induced) liquid crystal phases (3). These phases, like liquids and crystals, are discrete states of matter. They are fluids, but their x-ray patterns display sharp lines signifying the existence of considerable structure. They are often extremely viscous because of their high viscosities and for other reasons they are difficult to study using conventional methods. Use of Solvents. Organic solvents are sometimes used commercially to purify sulfonates or sulfates. Fats and Oils. Fats and oils (6) are traditionally sulfated using concentrated sulfuric acid. These are produced by the sulfation of hydroxyl groups and/or double bonds on the fatty acid portion of the triglyceride. Reactions across a double bond are very fast, whereas sulfation of the hydroxyl group is much slower. Yet 12-hydroxyoleic acid sulfates almost exclusively at the hydroxyl group. There is plenty of information available in literature on liquid crystalline and isotropic phases of different surfactants, but the study of the solid phases is limited to only soaps [12-19]. The basic reason for the lack of solid phase studies of synthetic surfactants is their limited use in solid form. The low KP of these surfactants limits their use to liquid products. Owing to a relatively high KP, sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI), alkyl glycerol ether sulfonate (AGES), and sodium cocoyl monoglyceride sulfate (CMOS) form solid phases at room temperature, but there is hardly any information available on these solid phases. [Pg.137]
