Sucrose benzoate

Sucrose is predominantly associated with the food industry, but it does have industrial uses in other areas. Sucrose fatty acid esters are a mixture of mono, di, and tri esters of sucrose with fatty acids. These are use in cosmetics, shampoos, resins, inks, paper processing, and pesticides. Sucrose benzoate is used as an emulsifier and in nail polishes. Sucrose has also been used in making glues and treating leather. [Pg.270]

On the other hand, the photoconductivity of a poly(vinyl chloride) copolymer and of sucrose benzoate each containing the leucobase of malachite green was characteristic of the dyestuff and independent of the polymeric host (137). This is similar to the behavior of conventional impurity semiconductors. However, a distinction must be drawn between an impurity which acts solely as an impurity providing an easier path to the conduction band, one which acts only as a plasticizer and one which may act as both impurity and plasticizer. [Pg.346]

In some cases, hot melt adhesive compositions are tackified, plasticized and reinforced with a variety of resins, oils or waxes that have been originally and initially derived from petroleum feedstocks. These classic compositions are generally very resistant to degradation. However, sucrose benzoate has been investigated and described as a tackifier for water sensitive or biodegradable hot melt adhesives (41). [Pg.218]

There is one significant article in the recent literature on the preparation of sucrose benzoate ( ). Ness and Fletcher described the preparation of the octabenzoylated derivative by use of benzoyl chloride in pyridine, followed by a work-up procedure which involved a carbon tetrachloride-methanol treatment. [Pg.224]

This resulted in a crystalline adduct containing sucrose benzoate and two moles of carbon tetrachloride. All previous and subsequent reports of sucrose octabenzoate describe only an amorphous product. This Ness-Fletcher adduct returned to the amorphous state after removal of the carbon tetrachloride under vacuum. This amorphous state is a second important characteristic of sucrose benzoate. [Pg.224]

The raw materials are pumped into a reactor and stirred vigorously, since the system is heterogeneous. After a suitable reaction period, the phases are separated and the toluene removed from the sucrose benzoate. [Pg.224]

The stability profile data in Table II, generally are quite favorable. Sucrose benzoate is resistant to prolonged treatment with boiling water and has surprisingly good stability against both acid and alkaline conditions. The rate of hydrolysis appears initially to be faster in base, but then may turn out to be slightly slower than in an acid treatment. [Pg.225]
