Sulfur Acids. Organic oxy acids of sulfur, that is, —SO3H, —SO2H, and —SOH, are named sulfonic acid, sulfinic acid, and sulfenic acid, respectively. In subordinate use, the respective prefixes are sulfo-, sulfino, and sulfeno-. The grouping —SO2—O—SO2— or —SO—O—SO is named sulfonic or sulfinic anhydride, respectively. [Pg.38]

In a free jet the absence of a pressure gradient makes the momentum flux at any cross section equal to the momentum flux at the inlet, ie, equations 16 and 17 define jet velocity at all points. For a cylindrical jet this leads to a center-line velocity that varies inversely with (x — aig), whereas for slot jets it varies inversely with the square root of (x — Xq As the jet proceeds still further downstream the turbulent entrainment initiated by the jet is gradually subordinated to the turbulence level in the surrounding stream and the jet, as such, disappears. [Pg.93]

The birefringence of substrate materials for optical data storage devices requires special attention, especially in the case of EOD(MOR) disks. Birefringence has no importance for glass substrates (glass does not exhibit any significant birefringence) and is only a subordinate factor for polymeric protective layers of aluminum substrates because of their reflective read/write technique. [Pg.156]

The FDA is headed by the Commissioner of Food and Dmgs. This position is not a Cabiaet-level office but falls within the PubHc Health Service (PHS), a division within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The post of FDA Commissioner is subject to HHS pohtical clearance and Senate confirmation, and the Commissioner is ultimately accountable to HHS, Congress, and the President of the United States. The Commissioner has a staff to assist ia poHcy making and several deputy commissioners to oversee operation of ah. the subordinate units. FDA has six regional offices within the country, each responsible for a section of the country, and 21 district offices. Persons with technical background typicahy work ia one of FDA s chemistry laboratories or as investigators or consumer safety officers. [Pg.83]

A debenture is an unsecured bond. Strong companies are in a better position to issue debentures than weak companies since they have less need to pledge specific assets. Debenture holders are really general creditors. Subordinated debenture holders have claims on assets only after the claims of certain other claimants have been met. The issue of subordinated debentures provides a tax advantage for a com-... [Pg.842]

There is a wide variety of impellers usiu fluidfoil principles, which are used when flow from the impeller is predominant in the process requirement aud macro- or micro-scale shear rates are a subordinate issue. [Pg.1623]

Through the process of delegation, authority is passed downward within the organization and divided among subordinate personnel, whereas responsibility passes upwards. [Pg.115]

A manager may assign responsibilities to a subordinate and delegate authority however, they remain responsible for the subordinate s use of that authority. [Pg.115]

Policies enable managers and their subordinates to be left in no doubt about what they are actually responsible for, the boundaries within which they need to work, and the demands upon them to which they will be expected to respond. [Pg.166]

Policies enable managers to determine whether a subordinate s action or decision was simply poor judgement or an infringement of the rules. If no rule exists, subordinates cannot be criticized for using their judgement, however poorly it is used. If a rule exists, one has to establish whether it was accidentally or deliberately broken, for the latter is a disciplinary offence. Without written policy no one knows where they stand and any decision may create an unwanted precedent. [Pg.166]

Policies enable managers to exercise control by exceptions rather than over every action and decision of their subordinates and therefore enable self-control by subordinates. [Pg.166]

In considering how to communicate the importance of PSM, a useful place to start is by reviewing the ways in which your company ordinarily communicates. Make a list of every company communication you receive. Then consider how you get the information you need to do your job and how you communicate with your colleagues and subordinates. Make a list of the information sources you rely on professionally. Finally, make a list of all the... [Pg.28]

The way that a group handles staff disagreement is also very critical. Performance may be hampered by what has often been called "reactance." The notion is that an individual with a high sense of competence will require freedom to express that ability. If this is denied and the competent person is "relabeled" in a subordinate position, performance will be severely impaired by a tendency to prove "how much better things would have been, if they had been done his or her way."... [Pg.145]

Reactance Occurs when a competent worker attempts to prove that his or her way of doing things is superior in response to being reassigned to a subordinate position. [Pg.413]

The occurrence of such a mechanism is also subordinated to the value of kinetic constant k (high values of k strongly favour an ECE process, the reduction rate of R or Ar being in most cases faster than any other chemical reaction). Electrochemical potential values... [Pg.1004]

No doubt, several conclusions can be drawn from such reasoning. First, the method being employed above converges in the space Ha with the same rate as the simple iteration method although it occurs in one of the subordinate norms. Second, the minimal residual method converges in the space Ha, that is, in a more stronger norm. [Pg.735]
