Subject index reaction

Coordinate Indexing and Boolean Logic. Three methods of indexing have been prominent in the chemical Hterature in recent times. The first, articulated indexing, has been used in printed Chemicaly hstracts subject indexes from their earliest days until well into the 1990s. A number of important concepts are identified as permissible index entries, including specific compounds, material types, reactions, and processes. One or more modifying statements foUow each basic index entry. Thus, eg. 

The Subject Index of over 20 000 entries has been compiled from keywords, names and formulae in the text and tables. It covers general classes of compound, specific compounds, general types of reaction, specific and named reactions, spectral and other properties, and other topics in heterocyclic chemistry. More details are again given at the beginning of the index in Volume 8.

The subject index provides access to the text by way of methods, techniques, reaction types, apparatus, effects and other phenomena. Also, it lists compound classes such as organotin compounds or rare-earth hydrides which cannot be expressed by the empirical formulas of the compound index.

An appendix systematically lists references to reactions of dialkylalkoxy-malonates with amines, including not only the common aliphatic and aromatic amines, but also a very wide variety of heterocyclic amines classified according to ring system. The appendix also provides systematic references to the different ring systems obtained by ring closure of the dialkylaminomethylenemalonates. The appendix should be used in conjunction with the subject index a separate subject index is provided for this monograph volume. 

The third edition contains major improvements over the previous two editions. I have updated references. Each reaction is now supplemented with two to three representative examples in synthesis to showcase its synthetic utility. As Emil Fischer stated Science is not an abstraction but as a product of human endeavor it is inseparably bound up in its development with the personalities and fortunes of those who dedicate themselves to it. To that end, I added biographical sketches for most of the chemists who discovered or developed those name reactions. Furthemore, I have significantly beefed up the subject index to help the reader navigate the book more easily. 

Examination of the subject indexes of Chemical Abstracts (CA) restricted to the terms browning and Maillard reaction gave the results shown in Table I.

The main topics of these symposia were collected in this book and the themes were regrouped under the umbrella of Glycomimetics Modem Synthetic Methodologies. The authors were asked to include key experimental details dealing with modem synthetic procedures, most of which describe the use of delicate transition metal catalyzed reactions. Thus this book will be a valuable tool for well-trained traditional glycochemists and particularly for newcomers in the field of glycomimetics. The subject index at the end of the book will help the readers retrieve die desired informations. 

The General Subject Index links subject terms, such as reactions, processes and equipment, classes of substances, and biochemical and biological subjects, including plant and animal species, with their corresponding CA abstract numbers. 

The final volume of Houben-Weyl—the author and subject index-promises to present a new, generally applicable system of organic chemical reactions which will facilitate the use of the whole set. 

Concurrently with the preliminary arrangement of source materials, a list of key words is compiled for use in checking the abstract journals—for example, although Chemical Abstracts has a fine subject index, the searcher must nevertheless look under a number of headings. In the case of the chlorination of methane, one cannot rely solely on the entries under methane and chlorination, but must check halogenation, paraffins, hydrocarbons, natural gas, and all the products that might be obtained by the reaction.
