The perceived need to identify objective markers to supplement, or conceivably supplant, the more subjective established histologic parameters has been a major driving force behind biomarker discovery efforts. It is crucial to recognize and account for the potential variability that can exist even with the new molecular parameters. Sources of variability include differences in molecular technique methodologies, tissue fixation and processing, interobserver and intraobserver variability (in immunohistochemistry-based biomarkers), and differences in cutoff points. Furthermore, illustration of statistical significance for a particular biomarker does... [Pg.614]

Because soil does not contain discrete objects with obvious boundaries that could be called individual pores, the precise delineation of a pore unavoidably requires artificial, subjectively established distinctions. This contrasts with soil particles, which are easily defined, being discrete material objects with obvious boundaries. The arbitrary criterion required to partition pore space into individual pores is often not explicitly stated when pores or their sizes are discussed. Because of this inherent arbitrariness, some scientists argue that the concepts of pore and pore size should be avoided. Much valuable theory of the behavior of the soil-water-air system, however, has been built on these concepts, defined using widely, if not universally, accepted criteria. [Pg.191]

There are no official specifications for obtaining a minimum level of engine cleanliness from a fuel. However, all additives in France are subject to approval by the Direction des Carburants (DHYCA), with the objective of having data that prove, first of all, the product to be harmless, and second, the product s effectiveness. Likewise, the automotive manufacturers, in establishing their specifications, set the minimum performance to be obtained by the fuel with regard to engine cleanliness. [Pg.243]

The efforts of the experts from Pivdenny have made it possible for Ukraine to become firmly established in the first three of space powers (after USA and Russia). More than 400 earth satellites developed in Pivdenny have been in space In recent years experts have developed the unique camer-rockets Zenith and Cyclone, capable of taking 4 and 14 tons into orbit, respectively. No other carrier-rockets of this type exist anywhere in the world, so they were selected for the international project Sea Start and Globalstar The NDT experts from Pivdenny have made a great contribution to these development, as practically all the parts and components of the carrier-rockets are subjected to thorough control. [Pg.970]

This establishes our assertion that the former roots are overwhelmingly more numerous than those of the latter kind. Before embarking on a formal proof, let us illustrate the theorem with respect to a representative, though specific example. We consider the time development of a doublet subject to a Schrodinger equation whose Hamiltonian in a doublet representation is [13,29]... [Pg.118]

The next question asked is whether there are any indications, from ab initio calculations, to the fact that the non-adiabatic transfonnation angles have this feature. Indeed such a study, related to the H3 system, was reported a few years ago [64]. However, it was done for circular contours with exceptionally small radii (at most a few tenths of an atomic unit). Similar studies, for circular and noncircular contours of much larger radii (sometimes up to five atomic units and more) were done for several systems showing that this feature holds for much more general situations [11,12,74]. As a result of the numerous numerical studies on this subject [11,12,64-75] the quantization of a quasi-isolated two-state non-adiabatic coupling term can be considered as established for realistic systems. [Pg.638]

Proposed flux models for porous media invariably contain adjustable parameters whose values must be determined from suitably designed flow or diffusion measurements, and further measurements may be made to test the relative success of different models. This may involve extensive programs of experimentation, and the planning and interpretation of such work forms the topic of Chapter 10, However, there is in addition a relatively small number of experiments of historic importance which establish certain general features of flow and diffusion in porous media. These provide criteria which must be satisfied by any proposed flux model and are therefore of central importance in Che subject. They may be grouped into three classes. [Pg.50]

Another reason for discussing the mechanism of nitration in these media separately from that in inert organic solvents is that, as indicated above, the nature of the electrophile is not established, and has been the subject of controversy. The cases for the involvement of acetyl nitrate, protonated acetyl nitrate, dinitrogen pentoxide and the nitronium ion have been advocated. [Pg.77]

Nitration in sulphuric acid is a reaction for which the nature and concentrations of the electrophile, the nitronium ion, are well established. In these solutions compounds reacting one or two orders of magnitude faster than benzene do so at the rate of encounter of the aromatic molecules and the nitronium ion ( 2.5). If there were a connection between selectivity and reactivity in electrophilic aromatic substitutions, then electrophiles such as those operating in mercuration and Friedel-Crafts alkylation should be subject to control by encounter at a lower threshold of substrate reactivity than in nitration this does not appear to occur. [Pg.142]

The raw data collected during the experiment are then analyzed. Frequently the data must be reduced or transformed to a more readily analyzable form. A statistical treatment of the data is used to evaluate the accuracy and precision of the analysis and to validate the procedure. These results are compared with the criteria established during the design of the experiment, and then the design is reconsidered, additional experimental trials are run, or a solution to the problem is proposed. When a solution is proposed, the results are subject to an external evaluation that may result in a new problem and the beginning of a new analytical cycle. [Pg.6]

Some limited, volume of tiaffic also may be subject to ceitain rates, terms, and conditions collectively established by a group of carriers pursuant to an agreement between such carriers, if approved and exempted from the antitmst laws by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) (8). Whenever any rate arranged between a shipper and carrier iacorporates provisions of such an agreement, a shipper should request confirmation from the carrier that the carrier is a party to the agreement. [Pg.257]

In 1965 the Water Quahty Act established a new trend in water pollution control. It provided that the states set water quality standards in accordance with federal guidelines. If the states f ed to do so, the standards would be set by the federal government subject to a review hearing. In 1966, the Clean Water Restoration Act transferred the Feder Water Pollution Control Administration from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to the Department of the Interior. It also gave the Interior Department the responsibility for the Oil Pollution Act. [Pg.2160]

Low temperatures can cause a phase separation in stabilized solutions in which case one phase can become deficient in stabilizer and subject to runaway reactions. Acrylic acid can crystallize out of stabilized solution, and subsequent thawing of these essentially pure acrylic acid crystals can initiate runaway reactions, often with severe consequences. Thawing of crystallized (frozen) materials needs to be accomplished using established procedures in thaw boxes or similar devices. If established procedures are not available, a safety review needs to be conducted and a procedure developed prior to thawing the material. [Pg.107]

The issue that must be managed is the appropriate threshold to communicate the change and initiate appropriate approval processes. Tolls subject to regulatory requirements may use the regulatory guidance as the threshold for management of change processes other tolls must establish the threshold appropriate to process risks, quality systems, and business concerns. [Pg.118]

All coils that are subjected to this test must fulfil the test requirements. In the case of a failure, investigations must be carried out to establish the cause and the same rectified before undertaking the insulating process on the next batch of coils. [Pg.262]

To establish the minimum fault level, impedances of the feeding lines from the source of supply up to a selected point, at which the fault level is to be determined, must be added. For a step-by-step calculation to arrive at such a fault level refer to lEC 60909 and the literature on the subject as well as the references at the end of this chapter. [Pg.350]

The cross-sections of the conductor and the enclosure arc then checked for their adequacy to dissipate the heat generated. The cross-section is then adjusted suitably by permuialions and combinations to arrive at the most appropriate size, keeping in mind the available extruded sections, accounting for all such factors that may affect the rating or the fatilt level of the enclosure and the conductor, such as tap-offs, which are subjected to a cumulative faull level, openings in the conductor for heat dissipation or the enclosure for inspection windows that can infhience their ratings. A calculation in Example 31.1 will clarify the procedure to establish the size of the... [Pg.943]

The subjects covered aim at providing methods to form specihcations and then design a switchgear assembly for all power distribution needs. It also provides coverage of draw-out asseinblies. Establishing the fault level of a system is described including the electrodynamic and electromagnetic forces that arise. [Pg.989]
