Schrodingers equation

The state vector is not physically observable. However, it bears all the information about the system. Such information is withdrawn through the eigenvalue equation. A good question is how the state vectors can be obtained. [Pg.15]

Quantum mechanics postulates that to every observable property of a system there corresponds a linear Hermitian operator. Mechanical operators having a classical analogue can be constructed when the operator forms for coordinates and momenta are known. [Pg.15]

The operator of key interest is the total energy operator—the Hamiltonian H. It consists of the kinetic energy part T and the potential energy part V [Pg.15]

The mechanical kinetic energy is expressed through the momenta of individual particles as follows [Pg.16]

When the potential energy is given by electrostatic pair interactions (as in atoms and molecules) then [Pg.16]

The basis for studies of the electronic structure of materials is the (non-relativistic) time independent Schrodinger equation, HQ = 0, where the Hamiltonian, H, in atomic units is  [Pg.9]

The experimental spectroscopic methods discussed below are performed in the steady state, i.e., the time average of the nuclei positions is fixed. This justifies the use of the time-independent Schrodinger equation in the calculations. Dynamical systems are also of some interest in the context of metal-polymer interfaces in studies of, for instance, the growth process of the metallic overlayer. Also, in the context of polymer or molecular electronic devices, the dynamics of electron transport, or transport of coupled electron-phonon quasi-particles (polarons) is of fundamental interest for the performance [Pg.9]

If we are interested in the ground-state electronic properties of a molecule or solid with a given set of nuclear coordinates we should seek the solution to the Schrodinger equation which corresponds to the lowest electronic energy of the system. However, the inter-electronic interactions in eq. (2.2) are such that this differential equation is non-separable. It is therefore impossible to obtain the exact solution to the full many-body problem. In order to proceed, it is necessary to introduce approximation in this equation. Two types of approximations can be separated, namely, approximations of the wavefunction, VF, from a true many-particle wavefunction to, in most [Pg.10]

In the framework of quantum mechanics, for every physical quantity F there is ascribed the corresponding operator F(r, t) depending upon spatial r and time t variables which, acting on the wave function of the system under consideration xp(r, t), transforms it, generally speaking, to the wave function of another state p(r, t), i.e. [Pg.4]

Then the numerical value of that physical quantity at the moment t may be found as the mean value [Pg.4]

Here t = r, a] stands for all spatial and spin coordinates. If two operators A and B have the same eigenfunctions, then this means that they commute with each other [Pg.5]

Two quantities, represented by commuting operators, possess definite values at the same time. In atomic theory it is very important to find a full set of commuting operators and wave functions, because in this case we can unambiguously describe the system considered. Having defined a full set of wave functions xpt (i = 1,2we are in a position to expand the function of arbitrary state xp in terms of linear combination of these functions of the system considered, i.e. [Pg.5]

It is very convenient, in quantum mechanics, to consider the wave functions and operators as matrices (matrix form of quantum mechanics). Then the wave function xpj(x) of a set of states of the system under consideration is represented by a one-column matrix [Pg.5]
