Bismuth compounds were once employed for the treatment of amoebic dysentery, certain skin diseases, and several spirochetal diseases besides syphilis, but these substances are now seldom considered the dmgs of choice. Various insoluble preparations of bismuth, especially the subcarbonate, subnitrate, subgaHate, subcitrate, and subsahcylate, are stiU employed for the treatment of ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders, even though use for these purposes is often supported largely by tradition. With a few possible exceptions, it is now difficult to justify the presence of bismuth compounds in a modem therapeutic armamentarium. A review of the biological activity of organobismuth compounds has been pubHshed (179). 

Bismuth subcarbonate [5892-10 ] (basic bismuth carbonate) is a white or pale yellow powder that is prepared by interaction of bismuth nitrate and a water-soluble carbonate. The exact composition of this dmg depends on the conditions of precipitation it corresponds approximately to the formula (Bi0)2C02. It has been widely used as an antacid (183).

Basic nitrate is usually found as an impurity in bismuth salts (e.g., bismuth subcarbonate), very often due to the mode of preparation from the metal via bismuth nitrate. 

Bismuth Subcarbonate To 0.25 g add 20 ml DW, 0.05 ml indigo-carmine and then, as a single addition but with caution, 30 ml sulphuric acid. Titrate with indigo-carmine until a stable blue colour is produced. The volume of indigo carmine required is not more than that equivalent to 1 mg of N03 (0.4%). 

Bismuth subcarbonate [(BiOl CO ] is used to make other bismuth compounds, cosmetics, enamel, and ceramic glazes. Its major use is as an opaque substance placed in the digestive tract to show up on X-rays. The bismuth blocks X-rays, and thus the physician can see patterns inside the stomach and intestines.

Some of tlie salts of bismuth are used in medicines for the relief of digestive disorders because of the smooth, protective coating the compounds impart to imtated mucous membranes. Like barium, bismuth also is used as an aid in x-ray diagnostic procedures because of its opacity to x-rays. At one time, certain bismuth compounds were used in the treatment of syphilis. Bismuth oxychloride, which is pcarlcsccnt, has found use in cosmetics, imparting a frosty appearance to nail polish, eye shadow, and lipstick, but may be subject to increasing controls. Bismuth phosphomolybdate has been used as a catalyst in the production of acrylonitrile for use in synthetic fibers and paints. Bismuth oxide and subcarbonate are used as fire retardants for plastics.

While in Europe most limit tests use the method of standard additions, the United States Pharmacopoeia [84] requires that an aliquot of the test element equal to the set limit be added to the sample. If the response of the sample solution is less than the difference between the sample solution and sample plus aliquot (control) solution, it passes the test. Such a test may be used to limit sodium in other alkali salts. Atomic absorption spectrometry using the air/acetylene flame has been shown to be sufficient to test lead contamination in bismuth subcarbonate [114] and in zinc oxide and carbonate [115]. Miller [88] has reviewed such applications.

Bismuth compounds are also widely used in various cosmetics. Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) is a lustrous white powder added to face powder. Bismuth subcarbonate [(Bi0)2C03] and bismuth subnitrate [4BiN03(0H)2 BiO(OH)] are also white powders used to give a pearl-like luster to lipstick, eyeshadow, and other cosmetics. 

BISG 10 1,1-decamethylenediguanidine. bismuth carbonate oxide bismuth subcarbonate, bismuth glycollylarsanilate [ban] (giycobiarsoi [inn]) has activity as an AMOEBICIDAL AGENT and can be used for veterinary trichomoniasis.

Bismuth Subnitrate. Bismuth subnitrate was the first contrast agent used clinically to visualize the alimentary tract (36). It was found to be toxic in humans through the reduction from nitrate to nitrite as a result, bismuth subcarbonate was substituted (82). When the toxic action was traced to the metal itself, the use of bismuth salts was discontinued.
