Strychnos vomica

Sixteen alkaloids have been isolated from the seeds of Strychnos vomica L [82]. This journal (Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica) being difficult to access, we report in Table 4 the 13C NMR chemical shifts for 2-hydroxy-3-methoxystrychnine (12), isostrychnine (13), isobrucine (14), isostrychnine-Af-oxide (15) and isobrucine-Af-oxide (16) which are new compounds. [Pg.1052]

Brucine, C2aH2e04N2. Brucine was first obtained in 1819 by Pelletier and Caventou from Strychnos Nux-vomica bark, then supposed to be derived from Brucea ferruginea. Its composition was determined by Regnault.i ... [Pg.556]

Strychnine is a complex lipophilic alkaloid from the plant Strychnos mx-vomica, which acts as a neurotoxin. It has been used to control vertebrate pests, including moles. The acute oral LDjq to the rat is 2 mg/kg. [Pg.6]

Iridoids and their related alkaloids are widely spread in angiosperms and are found in 13 orders and 70 families including Rutales, Buxales, Hamamelidales, Comales, Loasales, Gentianales, etc. Important iridoids are loganin, found in high amounts in Strychnos nux-vomica and in Catharanthus roseus, and secologanin found especially in Caprifoliaceae. [Pg.117]

The alkaloid normelionine-B (25) has been isolated from the root bark of Strychnos nux-vomica L. (30) however, its structure has not been established completely. The relative steric positions of hydrogens attached to the C-3, C-15, and C-20 stereo centers are assumed to be a,a,(3 or a,a,a, respectively. [Pg.148]

As reviewed by Ujvary some of the earliest natural product-based pesticides were those for the elimination of vertebrate pests. For example, strychnine (Fig. 19), obtained from seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica, is a rodenticide that is an antagonist to the neurotransmitter glycine and is used against a few mammal species, as well as pest birds and fish. The first generation of anticoagulant rodenticides were based on dicoumarin. [Pg.235]
