Stress-coping behavior

Behavioral alterations induced by stressful experiences frequently include increased anxiety-related behavior. Accordingly, anxiety has been hypothesized to play a role in stress-coping behavior (Ferre et al. 1994). The most regularly used tests for stress-coping behavior is the so-called forced swim test, which has been developed by Porsolt et al. A researcher-created self-report questionnaire, using a 5-point scale, consisting of 104 forced-choice items related to national culture (22 items, the 5-point scale was from 1 no importance to 5 of utmost importance), stressors (25 items, the 5-point scale was from 1 not serious at all to 5 veiy serious), reactions under stress (27 items, the 5-point scale was from 1 disagree very much to 5 agree very much), self-rated job performances (12 items, 1 disagree very much to 5 agree very much), and stress coping behaviors (18 items, 1 never to 5 always), was used in this study. 

The measures of the national culture were similar to the four types of national culture, namely individualism-collectivism, power distance (PD), uncertainty avoidance (UA), and masculinism-feminism as proposed by Hofstede (1980). The measures of stress coping behaviors were similar to Havlovic and Keenan s (1995) categories. The participants demographic data and their self-reported experience of involving flight accidents or events were also collected.

It s also important to realize the relationship between preferred style and behavior. Actual behavior is a combination of preferred style and learned coping behavior.
