The components we use are made from other components. Optimization methods from Operations Research are powerful instmments to solve many kinds of problems efficiently. Nevertheless, it is important to point out that the supposed optimal solutions of quantitative optimization methods are only optimal concerning the underlying quantitative model. The applicability and benefits of these methods strongly depend on the possibility of a suitable quantification. While, for example, logistic processes (stock management, transport routing, etc.) are very suitable for a quantitative description and optimizadcm, other fundamental corporate objectives like customer satisfaction or efficient communication are hardly transferable into an adequate objective function.
