Small metal clusters are also of interest because of their importance in catalysis. Despite the fact that small clusters should consist of mostly surface atoms, measurement of the photon ionization threshold for Hg clusters suggest that a transition from van der Waals to metallic properties occurs in the range of 20-70 atoms per cluster [88] and near-bulk magnetic properties are expected for Ni, Pd, and Pt clusters of only 13 atoms [89] Theoretical calculations on Sin and other semiconductors predict that the stmcture reflects the bulk lattice for 1000 atoms but the bulk electronic wave functions are not obtained [90]. A unique but widely studied polymeric LB system are the polyglutamates or hairy rod polymers. These polymers have a hydrophilic rod of helical polyglutamate with hydrophobic alkyl side chains. Their rigidity and amphiphilic-ity imparts order (lyotropic and thermotropic) in LB films and they take on a F-type stmcture such as that illustrated in Fig. XV-16 [182]. These LB films are useful for waveguides, photoresists, and chemical sensors. Perhaps the most fascinating detail is the surface reconstruction that occurs with CO adsorption (see Refs. 311 and 312 for more general discussions of chemisorption-induced reconstructions of metal surfaces). As shown in Fig. XVI-8, for example, the Pt(lOO) bare surface reconstructs itself to a hexagonal pattern, but on CO adsorption this reconstruction is lifted [306] CO adsorption on Pd( 110) reconstructs the surface to a missing-row pattern [309]. Returning to the Pt(lOO) case, as CO is adsorbed patches of the simple 1 x 1 structure (the structure of an undistorted (100) face) form. Oxygen adsorbs on any bare 1 x 1 spots, reacts with adjacent CO to remove it as CO2, and at a certain point, the surface reverts to toe hexagonal stmcture. For a reconstmcted surface, the effect of an adsorbate can be to provide a more bulk-like enviromnent for the outemiost layer of substrate atoms, thereby lifting the reconstmction. An example of this is As adsorbed onto Si(l 11)-(7 X 7) [37]. Arsenic atoms have one less valence electron than Si. Thus, if an As atom were to replace each outemiost Si atom in the bulk-temiinated stmcture, a smooth surface with no impaired electrons would be produced, with a second layer consisting of Si atoms in their bulk positions.
