Rigidity relative

The fact that molecules in L-B films keep fairly rigid relative orientations (at least within a microdomain) is potentially useful for regio- and stereoselective addition reactions (Figure 8.23). Here a derivative of cirfnamic acid forms the head-to-head dimer in the photochemical cycloaddition reaction. [Pg.273]

The plant cell is surrounded by a cell wall, which determines many features of the plant. The outer layer of the cell wall are called middle lamella because it contains heavy layer of pectin (a polygalacturonan) that serves as the glue to hold one plant cell firmly to an adjacent cell. The inner layer of the wall is cell membrane. The cell membrane is completely different from the cell wall in form, composition, and function. Whereas the wall is a rigid, relatively thick structure, the cytoplasmic membrane is thin (approximately 75 A) and flexible. The membrane is composed of protein and lipid, whereas the wall is carbohydrate in nature. The wall provides support, whereas the membrane regulates the movement of substances into and out of the cell. [Pg.111]

To account for this phenomenon the hybrids used in the bond polarization calculations were described in agreement with an idea taken from the maximum overlap method (17). Atomic hybrids with a rigid relative orientation were optimized so that the overlap of the hybrids that form a bond is at maximum. The estimated... [Pg.96]

The kinetic and activation parameters have been determined for water exchange on several poly(aminocarboxylate) ligands coordinated to Gd together with either one or two coordinated water molecules. In these systems the metal ion is nine-coordinate and the exchange rate constant is reduced by two or three orders of magnitude. [88] Distinctly positive AV values were obtained (D-activation) these could be explained by the steric crowding of the metal ion and the complex ion rigidity relative to the fully aquated ion. [Pg.119]

The major challenge to all recovery systems will be the increasing level of other plastic types in the feed material. Materials such as ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) are being used in VRLA battery cases, due to their toughness and rigidity relative to traditional polypropylene. For the recycler, this means that the valuable polypropylene tonnage will fall with a reciprocal increase in plastic types that cannot be recycled. This material will have to be disposed of, as ABS and... [Pg.508]

Most HPLC column packing materials use silica particles as the basis of the support. Silica is known for its reliable strength and rigidity, relative inermess and ability to be modified chemically. Significant scientific effort has been devoted to developing and improving the morphological and physico-chemical characteristics of these silica materials (Fig. 2.4). [Pg.45]

In order to comply with the allowable stress range, the center flange bolted assembly is made less rigid relative to the barrel. The center rope guide plates are split into 45 degree... [Pg.617]
