Eight Atoms

The rocksalt stmcture is illustrated in figure Al.3.5. This stmcture represents one of the simplest compound stmctures. Numerous ionic crystals fonn in the rocksalt stmcture, such as sodium chloride (NaCl). The conventional unit cell of the rocksalt stmcture is cubic. There are eight atoms in the conventional cell. For the primitive unit cell, the lattice vectors are the same as FCC. The basis consists of two atoms one at the origin and one displaced by one-half the body diagonal of the conventional cell. [Pg.99]

Amorphous or "plastic" sulfur is obtained by fast cooling of the crystalline form. X-ray studies indicate that amorphous sulfur may have a helical structure with eight atoms per spiral. Crystalline sulfur seems to be made of rings, each containing eight sulfur atoms, which fit together to give a normal X-ray pattern. [Pg.39]

Physical Properties. The absorption of x-rays by iodine has been studied and the iodine crystal stmcture deterrnined (12,13). Iodine crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and has a unit cell of eight atoms arranged as a symmetrical bipyramid. The cell constants at 18°C (14) are given in Table 1, along with other physical properties. One molecule (or mole) of propane reacts with five molecules (or moles) of oxygen to produce three molecules (or moles) or carbon dioxide and four molecules (or moles) of water. These numbers are called stoichiometric coefficients (v.) of the reaction and are shown below each reactant and product in the equation. In a stoichiometrically balanced equation, the total number of atoms of each constituent element in the reactants must be the same as that in the products. Thus, there are three atoms of C, eight atoms of H, and ten atoms of O on either side of the equation. This indicates that the compositions expressed in gram-atoms of elements remain unaltered during a chemical reaction. This is a consequence of the principle of conservation of mass applied to an isolated reactive system. It is also true that the combined mass of reactants is always equal to the combined mass of products in a chemical reaction, but the same is not generally valid for the total number of moles. To achieve equality on a molar basis, the sum of the stoichiometric coefficients for the reactants must equal the sum of v. for the products. Lewis s theory also fails to account for the compound diborane, B2H6, a colorless gas that bursts into flame on contact with air. The problem is that diborane has only 12 valence electrons (three from each B atom, one from each H atom) but, for a Lewis structure, it needs at least seven bonds, and therefore 14 electrons, to bind the eight atoms together Diborane is an example of an electron-deficient compound, a compound with too few valence electrons to be assigned a valid Lewis structure. Valence-bond theory can account for the structures of electron-deficient compounds in terms of resonance, but the explanation is not straightforward. [Pg.238]

The number of atoms in a unit cell is counted by noting how they are shared between neighboring cells. For example, an atom at the center of a cell belongs entirely to that cell, but one on a face is shared between two cells and counts as one-half an atom. As noted earlier for an fee structure, the eight corner atoms contribute 8 X 1/8 = 1 atom to the cell. The six atoms at the centers of faces contribute 6x1/2 = 3 atoms (Fig. 5.37). The total number of atoms in an fee unit cell is therefore 1 + 3=4, and the mass of the unit cell is four times the mass of one atom. For a bcc unit cell (like that in Fig. 5.34b), we count 1 for the atom at the center and 1/8 for each of the eight atoms at the vertices, giving 1 + (8 X 1/8) = 2 overall. [Pg.318]

Because of the conversion of orthorhombic sulfur to monoclinic form, the above values of melting points are difficult to observe, as the resulting allotropic mixture melts at only 115 C. Amorphous or plastic sulfur can be produced through the rapid cooling of molten sulfur. X-ray crystallographic studies show that the amorphous form may have a helical structure with eight atoms per turn. This form is metastable at room temperature and gradually reverts back to crystalline within hours to days but this conversion can be rapidly catalyzed. [Pg.8]

The CsCl type offers the simplest way to combine atoms of two different elements in the same arrangement as in body-centered cubic packing the atom in the center of the unit cell is surrounded by eight atoms of the other element in the vertices of the unit cell. In this way each atom only has adjacent atoms of the other element. This is a condition that cannot be fulfilled in a closest-packing of spheres (cf. preceding section). [Pg.160]

Sulfur vapor consists of a mixture of species that includes S8, S6, S4, and S2 (which like 02 is paramagnetic). Because the S8 molecule is nonpolar, it is soluble in liquids such as CS2 and C6H6. Selenium also consists of cyclic molecules that contain eight atoms, and tellurium is essentially metallic in character. In their vapors, several species are found that contain 2, 6, or 8 atoms. Both are useful as semiconductors, and selenium has been used in rectifiers. Because the electrical conductivity of selenium increases as the intensity of illumination increases, it has been used to operate electrical switches that open or close as a light beam is broken. Selenium was also used in light meters, but other types of meters are now available that are more sensitive. Table 15.1 gives a summary of the properties of the group VIA elements. [Pg.524]
