Flow charts may be developed through interviews or by assembling a group familiar with the existing processes. A facilitator helps the team identify all the process steps and builds up a representation of the overall process on a board using removable sticky notes. The resulting flow chart, Exhibit 3-5, has a more familiar look than that in Exhibit 3-4. 

Use process flow modeling. Using removable sticky notes, you can arrange the various requirements identified during the fishboning activity into a process flow model. Various compounding additives, such as mill release agent.s or external lubricants, are used to control the level of stickiness. Note, compound stickiness and tackiness are not the same property. 

The invention of sticky notes occurred over a period of about 10 years and involved a great deal of serendipity. The adhesive for Post-it Notes was discovered by Dr. Spencer F. Silver of 3M in 1968. Silver found that when an acrylate polymer material was made in a particular way, it formed crosslinked microspheres. When suspended in a solvent and sprayed on a sheet of paper, this substance formed a sparse monolayer of adhesive after the solvent evaporated. Scanning electron microscope images of the adhesive show that it has an irregular surface, a little like the surface of a gravel road. In contrast, the adhesive on cellophane tape looks smooth and uniform, like a superhighway. The bumpy surface of Silver s adhesive caused it to be sticky but not so sticky as to produce permanent adhesion because the number of contact points between the binding surfaces was limited.

It also implies that the more ordinary and ubiquitous the invention, the greater the wealth that the inventor will accrue. 

There was no market for sticky notes (Post-its is the 3M trade name) when they were released nationwide in 1980. By 1990, they were hailed as the top consumer product of the decade. In 2004, they were among the 122 everyday items in the Humble Masterpieces exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art.
