Continuous vulcanisation of rubber based products such as thin conveyor belting, flooring and similar can be achieved using a large rotating heated drum. Pressure is exerted to the product by means of a continuous stainless steel belt which presses the sheet to the surface of the drum. The belt is also heated from its reverse side to give optimum heat transfer to the vulcanising rubber. [Pg.200]

In the case of continuous operation, a series of kettles may be employed. A more preferable method of operation is the use of packed towers or columns constructed of steel or stainless steel. The thickness of the wall will depend on the pressures required for the particular reduction conditions being used. The size will depend upon the production volumes required. The towers may be packed with catalyst, generally on a support for ease of handling and greater surface, in random fashion, on trays, in wire-mesh baskets, or alternately with wire-mesh entrainment packing. Superabrasive tools, primarily PCBN, have been used to successfully weld ferritic steels, ferritic stainless steels, austenitic stainless steels, nickel-base superalloys. Invar, and Narloy-Z. Attempts to weld titanium with PCBN tools have been inconclusive. Tool life of 80 m (260 ft) has been demonstrated in FSW of 1018 steel, and very low tool wear has been reported on all other alloys. The primary concern in tool life continues to be fracture, and developments in PCBN grades continue to improve the fracture toughness of the FSW tools. Adhesives of HP type have been shown to bond bronze, lead, nickel, magnesium, copper, aluminum, steel, and stainless steel, in addition to most of the other substrates that earher offerings were capable of bonding. The modern batch deodorizer has a capacity from 5 to 30 tonnes. It is still frequently constructed of mild steel, though stainless steel is preferred. It is heated by high-pressure steam or, in some cases, by Dowtherm or thermal oil, and its vaporization efficiency has been improved by the inclusion of mammoth pumps and effective head space insulation to prevent refluxing. A vapour scrubber can be installed to recover oil and fatty acids from the distillate vapour. The complete batch cycle time is between 6 and 10 h depending on the feedstock. The aerial cable plant is located on telephone poles. The support hardware, made of galvanized steel, is attached to the poles and holds in place the galvanized-steel strands that span the space between the poles. The cables themselves are lashed to the strands with galvanized-steel or stainless steel lashing wires. The various splice closures are also attached to the strand with galvanized-steel hardware. Some cables have built-in strands ( Figure 8 cables). Both the cable and the strand are jacketed with polyethylene, and the two jackets are attached to each other with a continuous web of polyethylene. Corrosive KOH. Because of the corrosive nature of the KOH used as an electrolyte, all material employed in the construction of the battery and its accessory appliances must be KOH immune. Materials such as nylon, polypropylene, nickel-plated steel, steel, and stainless steel are therefore used. The potential hazard of KOH corrosiveness, however, is primarily encountered during maintenance. The use of safety glasses and safety face shields should he mandatory while performing maintenance on these batteries. A very small amount of KOH in the eye, for example, without prompt, continued, and adequate flushing followed by medical treatment can result in the loss of eyesight. KOH is also corrosive to the skin, and the affected area should be thoroughly washed and rinsed with water, thereby minimizing the detrimental effect. [Pg.799]
