Standard drawings

A number of standards exist for the determination of some of these parameters. BS 1377 Part 3 1990 refers to methods of tests for soils for civil engineering purposes, and Part 9 refers to these and corrosivity tests in situ. It is significant that the standard draws attention to the fact that the results of the tests that are described should be interpreted by a specialist. ASTM tests for pH and resistivity of soil used for corrosion testing are covered by G51 1977(R1984) and G57 1978 (R1984), respectively.

Unlike public review, which are almost exclusively for final drafts, private reviews cover several drafts of a single standard, drawing inputs to help its refinement through most of the process. There is a reluctance in everyone, not just developers, to hold up their early attempts, their unfinished work, to public scrutiny. That makes private reviews of early draft more valuable than public reviews. At each major revision of the standard, in many SDO s, the draft is distribution to the members for review and comment. For example, within ISO, each Committee Draft, CD, is sent to each national body for review, for comment, and for ballot. Liaisons and other interested reviewers, experts in some aspect of the standard, are also asked to participate in the review. The end result is that more aspects of the standard are considered throughout the development process. In addition, those external reviewers have a say and therefore a stake in the resultant standard. 

The Standards draw upon information derived from extensive research and development work by scientific and engineering organisations, at national and international levels, on the health effects of radiation and techniques for the safe design and operation of radiation sources and upon experience in many countries in the use of radiation and nuclear techniques. The United Nations Scientific Committee of the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), a body set up by the United Nations in 1955, compiles, assesses and disseminates information on the health effects of radiation and on levels of radiation exposure due to different sources this information was taken into account in developing the Standards. Purely scientific considerations, however, are only part of the basis for decisions on protection and safety, and the Standards implicitly encourage decision-makers to make value judgements about the relative importance of risks of different kinds and about the balancing of risks and benefits. 

The importance of direct concentration read out can be seen by a study of the time factors involved. Once sample preparation is completed and the samples are lined up ready for analysis, it is possible to analyze each sample in 15 seconds or less. If the readout is direct and linear in concentration, no further work is required. If, however, it is necessary to measure several standards, draw a working curve manually, convert the absorption reading for each sample to absorbance, and then compare it to the working curve, at least 30 extra seconds are consumed for each determination. 

As a straightforward example, we take the double group of D2. The standard drawing puts the twofold rotational axes in the positive hemisphere, and the corresponding spinor matrices are easily obtained from Eq. (7.34). The results are given in Table 7.3. The most important benefit of standard drawings is quality. Each detail for each projea initially reflects the latest engineering design technolc and is customized to meet particular client needs as well as special code or material requirements. Drawings are laid out well, and because is used, lines and text are dear and uniform. Standard symbols are also used.

WDT s efforts had resulted in the completion of a comprehensive library of standard drawings and instructions that covered all major options. The works order simply calls these up by reference number and description. The one exception is the fabricated cubicle that houses the packaged substations. This has to be individually designed. A simple CAD/CAM system enables the design and associated manufacturing instructions to be completed quickly. Presentations of the panels can be separately worked on and designed. The output is a set of computer numerical control (CNC) tapes for the relevant machines in the fabrication shop, and a set-up schedule indicating sheet size, clamp positions, list of tools, etc.
