From beeswax, myricin, an ester of palmitic acid and myricyl alcohol, CaoHsiOH, has been isolated from spermaceti (or head oil of the sperm whale), cetyl palmitate, CHsCCHslMCOOCwHas. Natural waxes are not homogeneous substances, of course, but are mixtures which are difficult to separate besides the esters, they contain hydrocarbons, esters of sterols, free fatty acids, and hydroxy fatty acids. [Pg.215]
