Spermaceti. Spermaceti [8002-23-1] is derived from the head oil of the sperm whale. Owing to the present status of the sperm whale as an endangered species, however, the material is no longer an item of commerce and has been replaced by other natural and synthetic waxes. 

Cetyl esters wax is a stiffening agent and emollient used in creams and ointments as a replacement for naturally occurring spermaceti. 

Waxes, too, are esters but in tiiis case glycerol is replaced by higher aliphatic monohydroxy alcohols. From beeswax, myricin, an ester of palmitic acid and myricyl alcohol, CaoHsiOH, has been isolated from spermaceti (or head oil of the sperm whale), cetyl palmitate, CHsCCHslMCOOCwHas. Natural waxes are not homogeneous substances, of course, but are mixtures which are difficult to separate besides the esters, they contain hydrocarbons, esters of sterols, free fatty acids, and hydroxy fatty acids. 

Wax and spermaceti are melted at a gentle heat, first (f all the almond oil is added, then the glycerine mixed with the rose-water, and finally rose oil, which can be replaced by some other sweet-smelling oil or compound perfume. F the preparation is to be used in the summer, it is as well to increase the wax by half, for this imparts more consistency to the whole ...
