For centuries, the honeycomb of bees, ie, beeswax, was the material commonly referred to as wax. Substances having typical wax characteristics have traditionally come from iasects, eg, beeswax from vegetables, eg, camauba and from animal, eg, spermaceti, origins (1). Waxes from mineral and synthetic sources have been developed both as substitutes for waxes from traditional sources and for new appHcations. Waxes from minerals and synthetic sources now surpass waxes from traditional sources ia toimage and commercial importance. 

Spermaceti. Spermaceti [8002-23-1] is derived from the head oil of the sperm whale. Owing to the present status of the sperm whale as an endangered species, however, the material is no longer an item of commerce and has been replaced by other natural and synthetic waxes. 

Like amides, esters are common both in nature and in the chemical industry. Animal fats and vegetable oils are mixtures of esters, as are waxy materials such as beeswax and spermaceti. Plants often synthesize esters that give the characteristic tastes and odors to their fruits and flowers. In addition to making synthetic esters for flavors, odors, and lubricants, chemists have made synthetic polyesters such as Dacron polyester fiber used in clothing and Mylar polyester film used in magnetic recording tapes.

The consistency of ointment sticks has to be high enough to prevent deformation while being used, but it should enable for active substances to be abraded. A suitable base is made from equal amounts of cocoa butter, white wax, wool fat and cetyl palmitate (synthetic spermaceti) or cocoa butter only. Ointment sticks with cacao butter only are used for cracked lips or to prevent lips cracking. Ointment sticks are packaged in aluminium foil and dispensed in a glass or synthetic jar. They can also be placed in lipstick holders.
