This procedure is speedy, economical, and employs materials which are readily available. It is not satisfactory for esters of dibasic acids.

These two examples hint at a few of the reasons for the importance of knowledge-based systems. A medical faciHty may handle hundreds of infectious disease cases a year. Speedy, accurate diagnosis of these cases, aided by a system such as Mycin, may help the medical faciHty handle more patients, more effectively. Likewise, configuring large computer systems composed of many components can be a time-consuming and error-prone task. 

Wiiest and Frey have pointed out that poppy straw has disadvantages in low yield of morphine and in bulkiness, and prefer poppy heads as a primary material. Many samples of capsules from seven countries were examined by them and found to yield from 0-18 to 0-9 per cent, of morphine, and they conclude that it should be possible to get ripe, dry capsules containing on the average 0-3 to 0-5 per cent, of morphine. Their paper includes a description of a process of analysis, which was found speedy and accurate.

Correct jigging and the suitable positioning of holding points are essential to obtain speedy and effective drainage. 

The transport of perishables by air does not require mechanical refrigeration, as low temperatures prevail at the heights flown. It should be mentioned that in the last few years super-cooled water has attracted the interest of many scientists because of its exceeding properties and life at temperatures below 0 °C 1819). Speedy recently published a model which allows for the interpretation of the thermodynamic anomalies of supercooled water 20). According to this model there are hydrogen bonded pentagonal rings of water molecules which have the quality of self-replication and association with cavities. 

The editors feel that the topics selected for these two volums on Characterization are new so as to qualify for this series, sufficently mature so as to warrant a review article, and of timely interest to the readers. These were the years when whatever could be made could be sold at a profit. The United States was involved in a world war followed by a postwar business boom and the Korean War. Then came 1958. The Korean War had been over for five years. The United States was in the midst of a major recession.. The chemical industry that previously could do no wrong found that all of a sudden its profits were declining rapidly. A blow to the pocketbook causes a speedy reaction. These are unstable forms of elements which decay by the emission of radiation. Attention is drawn to a special feature of this Volume—inclusion of a generalized Cumulative Index to Volumes 1-10. It is believed that use of this Cumulative Index, in conjunction with the detailed Cumulative Subject Index to Volumes 1-5 (in Volume 6) and the detailed, individual Subject Indexes to Volumes 6-10, will afford the reader speedy access to sources of detailed information in the various Volumes. This solution to the indexing problem was chosen for economic reasons.

Estuarine fungi contribute substantially to plant detritus due to their abundance and potential for degradation. Fungi are known to accumulate soluble atrazine from seawater through sorption, and release up to 2.2% as hydroxyatrazine and other atrazine metabolites another 4.6% is more tightly associated and less available to the external environment. The combined processes result in atrazine accumulation, and may contribute to its transport and redistribution through the estuary (Schocken and Speedie 1982, 1984).

As early GC peaks elute in a few seconds or less, rapid scanning of the mass range of interest is necessary.
