The assessment and treatment of autistic disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) requires a multidisciplinary team approach. Initial interventions are largely based on educational programming and behavior management principles, particularly for preschool- and school-aged children and adolescents. Speech therapy is usually essential and physical and occupational therapy are often needed as well. Despite these extensive therapeutic efforts, many children, adolescents, and adults with PDDs remain significantly impaired. Under these conditions, drug treatment is often necessary and appropriate. 

Speech therapy There is insufficient evidence to support or refute possible benefits of speech therapy after stroke for either aphasia (Greener et al. 2002) or speech apraxia (West et al. 2005), although patients and carers value such input and stroke-care guidelines recommend speech therapy. The behaviorist approach is based on operant conditioning, in which a behavior is modified by rewards or consequences. Rewards, such as stickers, toys, and praise, are used during speech therapy to encourage young clients to reach the target communication skill.

Many states require speech therapists to complete a minimum of four hundred hours of clinical experience, a thirty-six-week clinical fellowship, and the speech therapy Praxis exam to earn a clinical competence certificate (C.G.C.). 

In addition to the resourced provision rooms, there are specially equipped facilities for the small number of students who receive physiotherapy and speech therapy, but it is felt by the SENCO and other staff that there is insufficient support for children with therapy needs. In addition, the school has to cope with a lack of dedicated space that would be required for the development of a wider range of provision for example, there is a shortage of small teaching rooms, inadequate resources for the visually impaired and insufficient storage space for speciahst equipment. 

As problems centered around inter-agency co-operation and the funding of services adjacent to education (such as speech therapy and physiotherapy) there are issues here to be resolved concerning the financing of a set of devolved services. Substantial multidisciplinary co-operation is required at not only professional level but, perhaps more importantly, at administrative and pohcy-making levels.
