For this kind of toxicity specific structural prerequisites arc not required, thus leading to some spread of the compounds in stmctural space. About five of nine layers showed little tendency to duster, some of them with quite specifically acting... [Pg.510]

A number of other software packages are available to predict NMR spectra. The use of large NMR spectral databases is the most popular approach it utilizes assigned chemical structures. In an advanced approach, parameters such as solvent information can be used to refine the accuracy of the prediction. A typical application works with tables of experimental chemical shifts from experimental NMR spectra. Each shift value is assigned to a specific structural fragment. The query structure is dissected into fragments that are compared with the fragments in the database. For each coincidence, the experimental chemical shift from the database is used to compose the final set of chemical shifts for the... [Pg.519]

There is increasing evidence that the ionisation of the organic indicators of the same type, and previously thought to behave similarly, depends to some degree on their specific structures, thereby diminishing the generality of the derived scales of acidity. In the present case, the assumption that nitric acid behaves like organic indicators must be open to doubt. However, the and /fp scales are so different, and the correspondence of the acidity-dependence of nitration with so much better than with Hg, that the effectiveness of the nitronium ion is firmly established. The relationship between rates of nitration and was subsequently shown to hold up to about 82 % sulphuric acid for nitrobenzene, />-chloronitrobenzene, phenyltrimethylammonium ion, and p-tolyltrimethylammonium ion, and for various other compounds. ... [Pg.22]

The role that acid and base catalysts play can be quantitatively studied by kinetic techniques. It is possible to recognize several distinct types of catalysis by acids and bases. The term specie acid catalysis is used when the reaction rate is dependent on the equilibrium for protonation of the reactant. This type of catalysis is independent of the concentration and specific structure of the various proton donors present in solution. Specific acid catalysis is governed by the hydrogen-ion concentration (pH) of the solution. For example, for a series of reactions in an aqueous buffer system, flie rate of flie reaction would be a fimetion of the pH, but not of the concentration or identity of the acidic and basic components of the buffer. The kinetic expression for any such reaction will include a term for hydrogen-ion concentration, [H+]. The term general acid catalysis is used when the nature and concentration of proton donors present in solution affect the reaction rate. The kinetic expression for such a reaction will include a term for each of the potential proton donors that acts as a catalyst. The terms specific base catalysis and general base catalysis apply in the same way to base-catalyzed reactions. [Pg.229]

The electrostatic solvait effects discussed in the preceding paragraphs are not the only possible modes of interaction of solvent with reactants and transition states. Specific structural effects may cause either the reactants or the transition state to be particularly stroi ly solvated. Figure 4.12 shows how such solvation can affect the relative energies of the ground state and transition state and cause rate variations from solvent to solvent. [Pg.239]

Give a specific structure, including all stereochemical features, for the product expected for each of the following reactions. [Pg.507]

The goal of this text is to build on the foundation of introductory organic chemistry to provide students and other readers a deeper understanding of structure and mechanism and the relationships between them. We have provided specific data and examples with which to illustrate the general principles that are discussed. Our purpose is to solidify the student s understanding of the basic concepts, but also to illustrate the way specific structural changes influence mechanism and reactivity. [Pg.830]

Just as there must be some rationale for selecting a particular stiffness and/or strength of material for a specific structural application, there must also be a rationale for determining how best to achieve that stiffness and strength for a composite of two or more materials. That is, how can the percentages of the constituent materials be varied so as to arrive at the desired composite stiffness and strength ... [Pg.122]

Let s begin with an introduction to the area of design of structures. We will first contrast analysis, with which you are presumably quite familiar, and design. Analysis is viewed in Figure 7-5 in this manner analysis is the determination of the behavior that a specific structural configuration exhibits under specific loads. That is, what load does the structure take Or, how much does the structure deflect at a certain crucial point Analysis is a one-way street. We start with a specific structure, and ask how good is this structure, how much stress can it take, or how much overall load can it take without violating any stress... [Pg.372]

The fundamental objective in this section is to describe the factors and procedures to select the right material for a specific structural application. The right stuff for a material, as for a fighter pilot or an astronaut, is a complex combination of characteristics. To select the proper material requires being able to characterize and evaluate various composite materials (or metalsl) and to compare their attractive characteristics with the behavioral features required for a particular structure. Finally, a materials selection example of a space truss design problem will be addressed. [Pg.389]

Rank the following in order of decreasing acidity. Although none of these specific structures appear in Table 1.7, you can use analogous structures in the table to guide your reasoning. [Pg.55]

Specific structural information for various classes of chalcogen-nitrogen compounds will be discussed in the appropriate chapters. [Pg.33]

These Br nsted-type plots often seem to be scatter diagrams until the points are collated into groups related by specific structural features. Thus, p-nitrophenyl acetate gives four separate, but parallel, lines for reactions with pyridines, anilines, imidazoles, and oxygen nucleophiles.Figure 7-4 shows such a plot for the reaction of trans-cmmm c anhydride with primary and secondary aliphatic amines to give substituted cinnamamides. All of the primary amines without substituents on the a carbon (R-CHi-NHi) fall on a line of slope 0.62 cyclopentylamine also lies on this line. If this line is characteristic of normal behavior, most of the deviations become qualitatively explicable. The line drawn through the secondary amines (slope 1.98) connects amines with the structure R-CHi-NH-CHi-R. The different steric requirements in the acylation reaction and in the model process... [Pg.350]

Mass spectrometers exploit the difference in the mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio of ionized atoms or molecules to separate them from each other. The m/z ratio of a molecule is also a highly characteristic property that can be used for determining chemical and structural information. Further, molecules can be fragmented in distinctive ways in mass spectrometers, and the fragments that arise also provide quite specific structural information about the molecule. The basic... [Pg.136]

From the data reported in Table II it can be seen that a specific structural effect of the substrate plays a role in determining the appa-... [Pg.302]

We want to retrieve the literature citations to specific structures or family of structures. [Pg.103]

These core-shell type microspheres have very interesting structural features in that the cores are hardly crosslinked and the shell chains are fixed on the core surface with one end of the shell chains. The other end of the shell chains is free in good solvents for the shell chains. As the result of such a specific structure, the solubilities of the core-shell type polymer microspheres are governed by, not the core, but by the shell sequences, and the core-shell structures do not break even in the dilute solution [9,10]. [Pg.601]

Protein-protein interactions predicted on the sequence level can be studied in more detail on the structure level. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms can be mapped on 3D structures of proteins in order to elucidate specific structural causes of disease. [Pg.263]

Precisely defined collections of different chemical compounds are denominated as chemical libraries that can be efficiently prepared by methods of combinatorial chemistry. Each chemical compound owes specific structural, steiic, and electronic properties that determine all possible interactions of the small molecule with a given protein or receptor. The molecule s properties are based on the steiic arrangement of functional groups, including the conformations that can be attained by a specific structure. [Pg.382]
